: Scout Rebuild

I have been meaning to post this up for a while now. This is the next iteration of my Scout. My Scout was fully-functional (well, semi-functional actually:laughing:) and could handle any of the trails that I took it on. I hated the 14 bolt and found some unlucky bastard to buy it (If I sold it to you: read that as "It was a great axle and I miss it dearly!:flipoff2:). I also got into competition rockcrawling and was building a buggy. I think this was around 2002. I pulled the Atlas out of the Scout to use in the buggy. Well, two buggies later and a career change/college degree and I am finally ready to sorta focus on my Scout.

This is pretty much the last picture of it running and the start of the tear-down (Had already taken the cage out). At this point, it has a Chevy 305 with a modded carb, and SM 465, 4.3 Atlas, HP 60 front, 14 bolt rear, and 38's.

I ended up tearing the entire Scout down so that I could start over...

I had a FI dodge 5.2 left over from my first comp buggy that I decided would work for my Scout. I wanted to lower the engine down in the frame though so that I had a low CG. Made some new motor mounts to accomplish this.

I also didn't like leaf springs in the rear and picked up some coilovers from Tony K a few years ago. I am using leftover rod ends and RE joints for my rear 4-link. Here's some pics of the rear mounts.

The lower engine and high pinion required some creative exhaust routing.

I've had a 20 gal fuel cell for a long time. However, it used to sit in the bed. I decided that it needed to be mounted completely underneath the bed. It reality I'd prefer to custom make one that fit better and didn't hang so low but it just isn't in the cards right now.
Here's my fuel cell support thing. BTW, this entire thing is build with some scrap from a metal cabinet that I was given.

Back to my 14 bolt hatred:D...I don't remember where, but I picked up a 9" that had a 3.25" bearing 3rd member. It turns out that they 3rd that I had was actually a 9.25" or something. After ordering all the shit to build the 9" and then needing a new 3rd, I realized that it would have been cheaper to build a 60. Anyways, the plan is to weld 14 bolt ends to this contraption once I finish it (The last pic is how it looks now). Also, sorry, some of these are shitty cell pics.

That's about where I am now. The body will go on once I have blasted the bottom and finished the exhaust, cell mount, etc. My plans are to narrow the front but leave the rear alone since I seem to be in possession of the last remaining new STC soft top and I also want this thing to be street driven.

Looks good. I would love to lower my engine an inch or 2. but my SV motor is huge. Looks like your tierod darn near clears the whole engine:smokin:

I remember your post looking for numbers on the crankshaft height above the axle from a few years back.

Whats that tubing under the motor for? Looks like a straight steer bar and skid plate all in one.

I think that I'll need to move the tierod to the front at some point just so I can mount my hydro-assist ram to it. My current ram mounts down low to the factory TR location due to the Ford (weaker) knuckles.

As for the tube undercarriage. I had such great success with my buggy that I am copying the idea for the Scout. Here's my last buggy:

Changed the design on the rear axle some in order to finish faster. It is way overkill for what I need anyways. The fuel cell mount is almost finished too. I also just about finished my welding cart which is in some of the above pics too.

Not even close...I have an out-of-town project starting next month that might last all summer. I am guessing that weekends will need to be spent with the wife, not building the Scout.

It turns out that all summer = 6 or 7 months as I am still working out of town during the week:shaking:. I did get a chance to work on my rear links this weekend. I also fixed my band saw which allowed me to work on the exhaust some more but those pics turned out blurry:laughing:. At this rate, I will be finished around 2020!

Here's the lower rear links in progress:

that 318 was enough power for... anything? did you modify it? Every 318 i have ever been involved with was the most nutless v8 I had ever been around. Seemed like it was even slower than a 4.3 in a 1500.
I thought that I remembered reading that a 318 barley made more power than a 304.
They last a long time, but they had to in order to get anywhere.

I think that you are thinking of the old dodge 318s? The magnum 5.2s aren't hotrod engines but they do alright. IIRC 220hp, 300tq. Free is free...

free is free for sure, but why not spend another $50 for a 350?
All the 318's i have been around have been magnum 5.2's in 90's fullsize dodge pickups. They have all been autos though. They run smooth, and with big exhaust they sound like they are going good but they don't make any power. Can't really spin the tires. Won't tow anything more than a golf cart comfortably.

Well if you ran out of filler rod, then the process would be TIG. TIG is good for water tight connections. So,I think Guido got it.

I ran out of filler rod so I could not finish my other lower link. However, Guido is correct. I decided to build a gas tank that fits instead of trying to work with my existing fuel cell. Here's what I have drawn up. There is one bend that I couldn't do on the brake that I was using so I will cut out the notched part and then us my smaller brake to bend the reverse bends.

not enough info. How many gal.? how dose it work? etc.

It's about 21.5 gallons. It's designed to fit below the bed and around my 4-link. My original plan was to pull fuel through a lower sump but after discussing with a friend, he is looking for an in-tank pump and sender set up that I can drop in from the top. I'd prefer an in-tank system since it is quieter than the external pumps. I gave myself enough room to be able to move the rear axle back another 2" if I need to (I think it's back about 2"-3" now). I am going to figure out the filler part once it's mounted but I will probably need to notch the frame to fit it. Is that enough info?:flipoff2:

I was only getting about 4" of rear d-line drop at the pinion. Need to rotate the drive train just a bit...
