I was thinking about getting a new KTM or something soon. I think I want an '03 ktm 125 sx.

am I going to be able to get a green sticker for this? what are the parameters? spark arrestor? who dictates that you do or don't get a sticker?

the vin number dictates if you get a green or red sticker. i don't remember but it is just a portion of the vin that tells dmv if it is a carb approved bike.(what ever that means)
the dmv is way unorganized though. they still send me green stickers for my 1999 banshee and a friend of mine got both a green and red sticker for his 426. he put both of them on just to be a smart alick and to show the rangers how incompetent the dmv is.

i'd love to green sticker my 250 though. it sucks being banned from places. i wanted to take my wife to carnegy this summer once so she could practice her riding. i even started loading when i realized that i can't ride there it's like i'm some sort of criminal.

125 will make u bored dude
my bikes vin# shoulda got me a red sticker but i got green and so did my buddy with the same bike and vin deal. his green got renewed. i dont know if it depends on your dmv or what but i dont think a dealer around here got a red for a new bike. if all else fails, register it in vermont ;)

I was told if you have a 4 stroke you will get a green sticker . Most 2 stroke you will get a red . But I still see a lot of green stickers on 2 strokes . P.S. hawaii500 Carnegy sucks . To many jackasses out there that don't know how to ride safe .

4 stroke means nothing as for green or red sticker, basicly you will get what you get no matter what the VIN says or what year it is.

I've already gone through this with the DMV when I registered my 97 RM 250. they first tried to give me a red sticker, so I gave it back to them and left (I was very mad) I was then told by a CHP officer (who inspected my bike) that the DMV does'nt really know whats going on with the whole red/green issue. He told me that the DMV in Placerville had no red stickers to hand out therefore I would get a green sticker. He was right!

However, when you buy a new bike it is completely out of your hands!

My friend recently bough a new 2001 DRZ400, they sent him a red sticker....His friend bought the next week an XR400 and a xr100, the 400 got the green, and the 100 got the red! You figure it out!

Alls I have to say is that the rules are kinda shady right now, so there is no gurantee's.

hawaii500_1999 ,

Carnegie doesn't enforce the red sticker. I've been riding a few times this summer. I talked to Skip & he said they have never enforced the red sticker.

It might be a good idea to call first, but it makes for good riding cause most people stay home either cause of the heat or the red sticker.

I don't believe Hollister enforces it either, but best to call before making the trip.

shoot i was just looking at my little motorcycle banned list and they were on it. so i didn't go. guess i copuld try. they can just tell me to go home when i drive up.

this is so screwed up. the green and red stickers being issued all wrong. i really believe that the dmv is so incompetent they all need to be fired. anything that i take there that is not basic makes them quiver and crumble. i end up staying there three hours so that they can talk to all of the freaking bosses to find out that they need to do what i already told them.

it's the C.A.R.B. that has a problem with us.

the DMV is just ran by the special olympics team and can't take it when they are asked to do something new like having two different color stickers.

I went to the KTM shop today. chico DMV knows what's up apparently. you buy an SX model u get a red. you buy an MXC or EXC 2 or 4 stroke and you are green. what makes them green are the provision for lighting and the built in spart arrestors. that's what they said at least.

they are wrong.

lighting and spark arestors has nothing to do with it. if that was so the manufacturer would put them on all bikes so they could sell more.

what makes an offroad bike a "red sticker bike" is the emissions out put.

our bikes that we buy are required to pass a smog test basically. and if they don't they are banned at parks certain times out of the year.

it was a big fight back in 96/97, and some what after.
it was going to be worse. but thanks to district 36 and blue ribbon (and others)the standards implemented on the bikes was lowered. so that bikes could still be sold and ridden in california. to bad the bike manufactorers didn't step up and help us fight.

it is so chicken $h1t that C.A.R.B. picked on us, a small group, to make an example of. when there are tons of S.U.V.'s out there doing way way more pollution than our little population.

i think that if they out law dirt bikeing all together that there are going to be a lot of out laws in california.

That's right, a "3" or a "C" in the eight digit of your VIN on a 97 and newer bike = red sticker

anything else = green sticker or license plate
