let me be the first to say i dont much if anything about jeeps, im a toyota guy.
i need to help a freind of mine. he has a '99 jeep tj, and wants to build a lil better wheeler out of it.
this is how it sits now
4.0L 5speed, with slip yoke eliminator
rubicon short arm 2.5" lift
4:88 gears with detroit tru trac posi's front and rear, 33" worn out tires
dana 30-35
i built a winch bumper and has a 8k warn winch with clevis mounts.
i also tied in the cage to a pillar mounts and a couple other common tubes
so... he wants to bring me a corp 14bolt and 5k$
where would you start?
he wants to stretch 103-104ish
and run a 38-40" tire, it will be a daily driver maybe 30% of the time
he will throw more money at it soon but dosent want to be down for very long
all labor from me is going to be free as he has helped me in the past.

rebuilt d60 1500
rebuild 14bolt 500
new tires 1600
new wheels 400
That only leaves 1000 for shocks, links and all the rest.
5k just doesn't go very far anymore.:(

5K would make a pretty good suspension. get your brackets from ruff stuff he's great people. you can get new upper buckets from BTF. so dom or mild tubing for the arms locally and for about 400 bucks you can get the johnny's from ballistic. then cut and past. that should take care of the rear if you keep the front axle stock for now you can re locate the lower brackets back towards the skid then take the uppers off the lowers like the RELA kits do. cut your stock buckets off as clean as possible and move those forward about 2-3" and your done. not super easy but if you have a clue it's pretty fun and easy. good luck.

is he selling the old stuff? im sure a set of d30/35 with 4.88s and true tracks could get maybe close to 600-800??
sell the old lift and tires.
that should get him maybe another 1k at least.
so now youve got 6k and a jeep with no suspension or axles.
rebuild the 14 bolt with discs and 4.88-5.13 - keep the stock axles, weld the spiders. shave etc...
that should be less than 500
hes going to hate his clutch with a single 2.72 something low range t-case. for a 500 dollar doubler and a 250 dollar dana 300 you could have a doubler. your going to stretch the wheelbase anyway, so new dirveshafts will be needed either way.
the front axle will be the hard part. rebuilding a d60 is alot of money if you want all new parts. you could run a cheaper lockrite, stock shafts, good joints, spend a little more for hyd. assist and hi steer or crossover. keep the stock outer knuckles and such and get warn hubs is he doesnt want drive flanges.
250 - lockrite
150 - hyd. assist cylinder - get a used tapped steering box.
0 - stock shafts
100 - good (cheap) parts store ujoints untill he can afford upgrades
130 - for a single hi steer arm
200 - rebuild kit including kingpins
=830
your looking at close to 1k for a budget built d60 not counting on the axles price. (lets say 800) + 830 =1630
then plan to spend 1500 - 2000 on all your suspension material. links, rod ends, tube, brackets, brake lines, etc
if your building the links you could probably cut that in half. assume 1500
then depending on new or used tires and wheels, that can vary from 500 up to 2k. keep an eye out for a descent used set. lets say you pick up a set of 40's on steel wheels used for another 1k
that comes in at 5380.00
not counting any hickups along the way, plus smaller miscellaneous stuff.
best place i see to cut cost immediately is get a good deal on wheels and tires. hit up the junkyard for steelies, i can get them for around 10 bucks a piece. sand and paint then your good to go.
next way to cut cost is to run stock steering without a histeer arm, just over the knuckle with hyd. assist.
anyway, thats just a quick overview, im sure most of those prices are off a little. you get the picture though. keep your eye out for good used deals. that helps alot.
