Here's the story:

Bought a trailer a while back for a very good deal. Problem is that it's a heavy equipment trailer. Huge I-beams under it and it's rated for 7 tons. Wood deckover, 20 ft. with dovetail and built in ramps. Electrical, brakes, etc.

I have the opportunity to sell it and make a little coin. I'd like to get a new trailer but am torn between deckover or car hauler style. I used to have a car hauler but I hated driving over the ramps. Especially when my Jeep was broke and couldn't do it under its own power. The deckover is generally wider and it's a straight shot once you get up the dovetail.

The Jeep looks like this:

it's every bit of 8 feet wide. Should I suck it up and get the hauler to reduce wind drag and get some better mpgs or should I go with what's easier (IMO). This will be a tag-along trailer, if that matters.

I'd keep what you have, I have a car hauler and would much prefer a deckover, but I also use my trailer for alot of other uses too.

I am also assuming you have tandem 7k axles, so if you go to a car hauler with dual 3500#s you'll regret it do to the decreased braking the 3500#s have, you'll definitly feel a difference even with brakes on both axles and only hauling your jeep.

My car hauler is 102" wide outside of the fenders so the deckover isn't any wider it just has more usable space, as far as wind drag and the load being higher I don't really see how that is going to affect your mpg much, maybe 1mpg tops in the right conditions.

thanks. that's what I'm looking for. someone who has had both and can tell the difference. The old car hauler I had didn't have brakes so it's not a fair comparison to what I have now.

id also keep what you have,or at least get a somewhat less heavy duty deckover. my bumperpull is 91" wide and i woundnt want it any less. driving over the fenders on your standard car hauler would definately suck ass and get old real fast.

my deck height is about 25 inches, not real high but higher than most low slung carhaulers. ive never towed my junk on a low trailer,so i dont have anything to compare to,but i get 12-14 towing it,and i dont think it would be much different if it was shorter. total weight of it is about 2100 lbs.

how heavy is your current trailer? my 36 foot goose is real light for what it is... about 4500 lbs. its got a deck height of about 36 inches... if i haul 1 rig on it,it may be pretty compareable to you when you tow your 7 ton trailer. with my 96 dodge 4wd dually i get 12ish when towing it with 1 rig-prolly 8500-9000 lbs. again, i am pretty sure mileage would not be anny better if it were a lowboy with a 2 foot shorter deck height.
