From their FAQ Section:

Is the truck lighter than the original one now that it is aluminum?
The truck has a curb weight of 2300 kg (5060 lbs) while the original is classified at 2050 kg (4510 lbs). Even though aluminum is much less dense than steel, some of the members are 4-5 times as thick as would be in a steel vehicle. Where ever we have been unsure of strength criteria we have always erred on the side of caution and made structural members far bigger and stronger than they need be.

LOL! I could just see someone stealing this thing only to strip it down for the $.50/LB recycling cash. :D

This is to say, we have no fucking idea what were doing here, but we sure do have a ton of time and cash on our hands!

This is quite an ambitious project. I give him a helluva lot of credit for taking on something like this. You don't like it, that's fine, but it's pretty damn cool to build a totally new body from scratch.

I say way to go, Robin! Now put some better (bigger) pictures on your site. The ones you've got now suck! :flipoff2:

I just think had they put the money into restoring their 60 they'd be a lot better off. I'll grant you it's an ambitious project, and each to their own and all that, but it just looks to me like a lot of trouble to make a 60 series truck really ugly.

But what do I know...?

At least our rust problem isn't as bad as what the International Harvester guys have to deal with:eek:

Floor panels are next on my list, although my feet still stay dry during a river crossing. That is, until I stick her into a big rock and have to get out and pull cable.

(Looking back at those pictures -- I can't believe I bought this truck!)

I give those people props, I think it's a totally ambitious project and if you can actually do it and get it done, especially to the extent (and at least seeming) quality which appears then even more props.

I think being into cars and cruisers is all about what you want to do with it and what you make of it, not what other people are doing or think. I can say personally I've done shit to my truck which I've regretted because other people are doing it. Secondly, at least for me, "cruising" is a three part stage, 1)reading about it and talking about it, 2) understanding it, taking it apart, doing things I want to do for my own purposes, and 3) driving it and enjoying it.

In this case, it's a young couple who are into cruisers (and obviously not serious rock crawling / off roading), more of the cruiser experience for them is about being in the truck and using it as a utility vehicle. Second that with being an aluminum welder, so you're doing most of the work yourself, you have a compitent aluminum source, and you have the satisfaction that you built your truck almost completely by yourself and building it extra beefy. You have the assurance that if you built it right, it will last because it's aluminum, with the added insurance of a diesel just broken in on a solid Land Cruiser frame and axles, what more could you ask for I think.

Maybe they spent $20,000 building it, but they basically have a new truck. I think it's admirable.

With all due respect (seriously), I guess I'd like it a lot better if:

1 -- it didn't look like a Rover
2 -- it still bore some resemblance to a Cruiser, or
3 -- they weren't calling it a Cruiser.

Anybody know them? I see they have a TLCA plug at the bottom of the page. Members?

The TLCA connection is there. Robin's on the LCML. Or at least he was the last time I was on, about two months ago. :D

I dig it! It's *bizarre*, but in a cool way, I can admire and appreciate the amount of planning and work that went into it. That said, here's some observations:

1. There will be ZERO market for this vehicle except as a one-off, I cannot see a demand for them as a production item. Lot's of people will say they want one, then they'll see the bill and back out.

2. All that complicated, custom metal work, and they kept the CRAPPY OEM plastic center console?

3. They gotta do something about the front of the truck, it's UGLY. The back and sides are not too bad, but the front needs an FJ40 bezel or something to improve the looks.

4. First they claim the frame was swiss cheese, then they talk about patching it up, cleaning and painting it, and then USING it for the project? Wouldn't it have been better to go full tube or at least custom frame at that point?

5. Anyone else notice the rear shackle angle? YIKES!

All in all, it's pretty interesting, I'd love to see it in person and drive it, I'm curious as to how it feels. As a 60 series fan, I'm amazed, this is the first ever I hear of a radical project involving a 60 series.

dont see many modified 60s, more hoopties kicking around than anything else!!

that thing looks cool, granted its not for everyone but nothing is, i was epecting some ghetto fabbed ugly POS, but i opened it and thought it was a good looking truck, it doesnt look like a rover to me, different, maybe an OKA, or even a baby hummer, or something

it looks cool, id never shell the pe$0$ on it, BUT if they want to give it away, it would make a good tow rig for me!! :p

on my dads old 55 the sills were like those ones. He just cut them out and welded in water pipe. Take a bit longer to rust out then!

Yeah, I cut them out, slathered them with POR15, then welded in beefy sliders. Sliders are the cheese for the wagon crowd. :D
