: Advice on buying a land rover
GloNDark 10-08-2002, 07:55 AM Well now that I am permanently stuck in my civic.....I HATE IT! hahaha.
The wife and I decided last night that we should sell the car and get another 4x4. Well it just so happened we were passing a used car lot (Private party sales) and there were a couple 4x4's on it. So we stopped and looked at a 97 Discovery and a 95 Defender. The wife loves the discovery and I think it's killer. Too bad they defender wasn't a 4 door I could have talked her into getting it right then and there.
Anyway, long story short. What should I look for in a one of these?? What are considered high miles for a land rover? Any mechinical problems I should look out for?? Models to avoid??
Any advice would be killer!!
Thanks!
fugly 2 10-08-2002, 08:13 AM The Defender should still be worth money in a few years ,where as the Disco will be just another Disco .If your serious about wheeling buy the 90 ,but if your serious about your reflection in the shop windows ,by all means go the disco .
Now sitting back waiting for Disco owners to start flaming .
GloNDark 10-08-2002, 08:24 AM hahaha. I won't be wheeling this one hard that's for sure. That's what the cruiser is for. :D
However, it would be nice to know I could make it out there if I wanted too. :D
madcowdungbeetle 10-08-2002, 08:47 AM I know a guy who's range rover died finally after 391k. I know of another that had 285k on it last time I saw it, and I've seen quite a few Discos and Classics w/ 210k + miles.
I've got 124k on mine, and it runs great.
fugly,
the disco can be... defenderized ;)

RockRover 10-08-2002, 09:02 AM I gotta' ask...Who actually uses sand-ladders?
Personally I wouldn't touch a Disco with a 10' pole...As a daily driver that is.
Flame suit on!

Damn, I feel like I am at a 12 step meeting.
I was going make some from aluminum stock, and the main use would be to get my old broken down shepherd into the truck since she's getting old.
J
fugly 2 10-08-2002, 10:05 AM Rockrover ,the sand ladders are just an aluminium version of WW2 aircraft landing strips and come in very handy if you wheel in tropical areas during the wet season .Trust me if you need them you'll be glad to have them ,though I have yet to use them in a desert/sand enviroment .
Madcowdungbeetle ,I hear what your saying .IMO its just easier to start with a 110-90 .Personally I'd go for a RR Classic ,more style and they're shorter than a Disco ( don't believe me ? then whip out your trusty measuring stick and suprise yourself ) .Mechanicaly there is nothing between any of them apart from the Salisbury rear on the 110 .But supply and demand being what it is the 90/110's will maybe hold their resale value better over the long term .If nothing else you'll get your money back by parting them out ,judging by the results of others here on the board .
GloNDark ,it really doesn't matter which one you buy ,as you WILL become familiar with the contents of your toolbox or the local mechanic .

QUIT POSTING THAT PIC!!!
I want a D110 so bad, but there is no way that I can afford one. I totally love the one in the pic. I wantIwantIwant.....
When the time comes that I have enought time and money to fool with it, I plan to import a 110 wagon body, and put it on a domestic chassis.

Sean you do realise that a 109 and a 110 are basicaly the same animal body wise .Only major differences are hood ,windsheild frame and the leading edge of the roof to accomadate the taller screen .You could very easly *make* a 110 from a 109 .Any 109 from 1958 onwards will do ,if your just after the *look* .Hell , even the doors will bolt straight on .

I have a freind who is an importer who lives overseas. He assures me that he could get a Defender body with all interior exterior peices very cheaply. By the time that I buy Defender wings and bonnett to make the Series look like a Defender + the series body t start with , I am already into the cost territory of just importing the Defender body which would hopefully be in much better condition that I could find a series body for.
I have only ever seen 1 series truck for sale in my area(an seriesII 88). How much should a good running condition 109 wagon Series cost?
I have never even seen one of them.
Is the top removable on hard top models?
I love all of the old LandRovers though, and wouldn't mind having a couple of them.
My purposes for for a domesticated :D 109/110 would be a daily driver that 12 people could fit into, also back country expedition, and heavy duty tow rig.
Also, I think if I were to carry the project out, I would stretch the wheelbase out to around 120" by moving the rear axle back, and reconfiguring the wheel wells. I would also WANT to square out the lower of the rear doors to look lie the fronts , just like Serious One has done with his 145.
Thanks for the info,
Sean
fugly 2 10-08-2002, 12:41 PM OK ,if were going to hijack GloNDark's thread we better get to it .
All series/Def' roofs unbolt .For that matter the WHOLE car unbolts .Guards/firewall/windsheild frame/b pillar/rear tub/rear side panel with the glass ( same panel 88"/109" ) /all the floor panels etc etc etc etc .Series 11 onwards roof can be used on 110 ,just needs an adjustment at the front for the taller screen .Only tell tale sign being the three ribs on the outside .Has the word "Mecano" come to mind yet .Only panel on the car to not change since 1958 was the rear door .All panels interchange 109/110 ,some with no mods ,ie doors-bolt straight on .
As for price on old series ,I'm in Oz ,so they're a dime a dozen .Cheapest 110 Defender ( first of the 300 tdi )I've seen with low milage went for 8000 Aus ( it was a repo' and the finance co' just wanted its money ) at auction .Early 110 Countys (1985) ,start at about 3000 . EDIT . Just for sh!ts and giggles ,we got the early 110 county and the series 111 stage one , with the Isuzu 4BD1 ,but these command a higher price . EDIT .
Square doors ,127 crew cab ,used the square rear doors .Mike's rear doors have been stretched and squared .I could be wrong ,but I *think* he started with a 130 .
If you can buy that puppy at the right price ,then dont just sit there typing ,get onto that importer .

I agree with your point ,but Aus' has plenty of tropical regions .Dont beleive the tourist brochures proclaiming that its all beachs and or outback desert .It stretches from the Kimberly's in the west to the Cape in the east .Thats roughly 2000 odd miles as the crow flies .Try searching for *Kakadu-Australia* or *Cape York * Just as not all Americans smoke Marlboro and live on a ranch .
Station 10-08-2002, 01:02 PM Sorry GloNDark , Just one more post.
Thanks for the info Fugly. That helps allot. I will keep those things in mind untill I start this project if it ever happens. I would buy a Defender body now that the price is right, but I am truly split in too many ways right now to even think about starting another project any time soon. So for now for now, I will just think about startign it in1-2 years;).
Yeah Right Doug, I am getting freaking rich over here:p. I need to quit giving junk away if I am going to start making money.
Actually, I think I will be making pretty decent money with it soon, once I get my insurance and all figured out. Then I am going to be at it FULL AWN! SWEET things to come very shortly. You need 4 wheel steer on that buggy of yours Doug...Yes...Yes you do. ;)

You should see the look you get when you pull some down from a 4.0 and use them to climb a shelf.
They owner replied: "well, at least I didn't stack rocks"

Yes...YES...YEEYES!!!
Actually I'm seriously considering it...But it will be on a mog/9-inch hybird...If Sir Daniel get's the price on the adapter flanges and the "top-secret upsidedown 9" oiler bit" down a bit, I'll go for it....Then I'll be calling you (instead of 1000+ word PM's) about how to plumb it all together...Of course by then you will have forgoten about the 'little-guy' and will be charging Jeff Howe prices...But that's the name of the game I guess...Guess I'll just have to get off my arse before you go big-time!
Got the blead proceedure ready!?

DAMN - I just bought one. 97 3.9L V8 auto, stock as a rock and planning to keep it that way.
Although one question - what is the biggest tyre I can put on this thing with no rubbing, no cut guards, no lifted springs, no extended bumpstops, no nothing - just bigger tyres to make it look better. :D
Im serious on this one - dont make me go to discoweb.
And if sombody says bloody "search" ill go away and cry cause I hope this info isnt on this board. Maybe sombody should PM me instead so that we keep it that way.

Even though your name implies IH, you are still a Rover guy....in denial. :D

Serious One 10-08-2002, 04:14 PM OK, now waaaaaaiiiiiit just a minute here. Let's get this straight.
I *started* out with a 109. Now it's somewhere between 145-147 (146?). :flipoff2:
And I have two pairs of *front* doors, the rear doors have not been stretched, rather they have been squared off.
See pic below.
road1will 10-08-2002, 04:26 PM mike, what are you doing for glass?
Serious One 10-08-2002, 04:31 PM same thing as everything else you can't buy. CU-SSSS-TUM.
I do need all the internals like window lift, interior trim, handles, locks etc....
Know anyone who has some totalled doors???
road1will 10-08-2002, 04:41 PM nah unfortunately, although i do have a cool project up my sleeve for a tow rig :D

In all seriousness ,I'm thinking .....oh......like.......35"..37" .
The fact that you will not be able to move/drive it being irrelevant , because you said "just bigger tyres to make it look better "
Serious One ....What can I say ? . My VERY VERY BAD !! .
Honestly had nooooo idea that you started with a 109 ,and two pairs of front doors .DAYUMM .Whats the color of red ?...........my face .My only defence Your Honour is that anything after 1958 isn't realllllyyyy a Landrover .
DAN now slinking off with tail between legs to work out this 'search' thing ,people keep whispering about .
Serious One 10-08-2002, 08:05 PM Aw Fugly, you know I love 'ya.
I was just joking about the 109 thing. I just have to 'remind' people that it 'started' as a '109', so that when I go to 'license' it the VIN plate matches up with the frame. Get it? ;)
The red is actually poppy red from a SIIa door that we had to cannibalize some sections from the front door skins.
I have to agree with you. You and I are the only ones on the board that own a Land-Rover. Everyone else just owns a derivative.

.........Sig' for this post........
Damn ,I reckon if I was any greener ,someone would roll me up and smoke me .
EDIT , just remembered that I'll be visiting my 'stash' soon ......1960 109.............1957 88.......and those bits of aluminium are easy to send to Disenyland ,but they'll need a guide when they get stateside .Holler if your interested Mike .
Serious One 10-08-2002, 08:44 PM Fugly,
I'm always interested in acting as 'guide'. For bits of aluminium, or otherwise.
Let me know what you have in mind! ;)

That'll be the part that when passing airfields tries to drag the car onto the runway to rejoin its kindred spirits............either that or it'll be the part that never works properly .
I really hope your paying attention GloNDark ,cause theres going to be an oral exam on the merits of buying either a Disco or 90 next week .So listen up..you hear .
redrangie 10-08-2002, 09:14 PM Yo Glow,
By the Disco, get the rosewood latte holder and be done with it.

Serious One 10-08-2002, 09:36 PM IMO he should buy an Expedition and be done with it that'a way.
Still a 'Rover' family product eh?
