So here is a brief history of what i got going on here. I bought a wrecked 2001 Dodge 3500 dually truck with 72k on the ticker back in 04. It was pretty straight but had a bent frame. I had the frame straightened to within about a half inch. good enough. Drove it for a couple years until the unit bearings went out, then put a 78 HP Dana 60 under the front with 6" (92-97) ford front leaf springs, with a mixed rear pack plus airbags. Drove it for a couple more years, had a kid and now need a crew-cab. So I figured I'd never get out of my truck what is was worth to me, and cant afford a 03-07 Dodge, so my next best choice for the best crew-cabs is a 73-79 Ford. And just for the record I dont have TV so I knew nothing about the build "superdually" on the TV show "Trucks", my buddy told me about it after I started getting parts. But the show is a great resource for build info

sorry no pics, didnt realize I let my red star expire, got er all fixed now.

I knew I'd catch some flack for this from the Ford crew, but in the end it'll be more Ford than Dodge so deal with it. The facts are the truck already has the arguably best front axle ever (Ford HP D-60 with 35spl. cro-mo), Ford front and part of the rear suspension, one of the best drivetrains ever (24valve-NV5600-241HD), one of the best light truck rear axles ever (Dana 80), but it still has the stock 1 ton dodge frame which will be beefed in certain areas. While it might not be a tough as a superduty frame, they arent crap.

here are some pics to start with............

looks like things will work in my favor, the tape says i will not have to move the drivetrain back 6" or so as the TV show says. When I put the leafs under the front i moved the axle forward about 2" for fender clearance with 37's. I put it together with the offset centerpin ford springs, backwards, with the long side forward for better fitment of hangers and shackles. Now I can flip the springs the correct way, and get the front axle forward the whole 6" I need for proper engine to firewall clearance! I just hope it all works out as good as it looks on the tape!

power-washed the engine and under the cab,

gutted the crap out of the inside

finished up the caster shims on the axle

test fit the body, looking really good, a little clearancing for the down pipe off the turbo on the firewall. everything else as far as engine/trans to cab clearance is looking great, she's gunna set right down in place soon. this is how they should've come stock in 2001.........with a 78 cab:smokin:

as long as my tape isnt a liar, my front axle will be about 2" forward from what a stock 79 ford is...................thats perfect

Agreed, the axle looks to be more than 2" forward for fender to tire clearance than stock configuration. Great looking build going so far, subscribing.

You also got a sweet deal on that cab.

Just for shits I pulled a measurement on my crew. From the front door, lower part by the body line, it is 28 1/2-29" to the center of the front axle.

for the bed..................it will be something to the tune of a hybrid rockcrawler style and functional pickup work truck style. I need one with plenty of storage for doing mobile welding jobs/camping/wheelin/chase truckin/wildland firefighting and just doin what i do. there will be 6' boxes on each side with an extra fuel tank hopefully about 40 gallon where the spare tire used to be. plus two boxes built into the bed for chains other stuff.

I think it lookin pretty good...........................

this afternoon the plan was to do a clutch with the body off, picked up a "heavy-duty" one from Napa, last I checked "heavy duty" did not consist of plastic clutch disc hub parts, from china!:shaking: getting a Valair Kevlar/ceramic order in tomarrow. thanks for the help Ben!

moved on to re-setting the body on the frame ready for tomorrows body mounting session

got good clearance on the back of the valve cover and exhaust brake can, with an absolutely perfect spacing wheel to fender

the insulation for the firewall hopefully will be here tomorrow too

got the exhaust insulation wrap on the down pipe too. it gets pretty close to the kick panel, and at temps of 1000* cant have Mama's toes burning up! wait, they're always cold anyway, mabey I should take it off, na, she'll just get a blanky

WOOOHOOOO! parts showed up yesterday! I put the very good looking HD towing clutch from Valair in. I went with a full organic friction material with the heavy duty hub (no plastic) and pressure plate. The Valair guy said these are good for 400hp and 900lbft, with excellent drive-ability when towing, that should be plenty for me, my motor isnt that hot, and wont be, I want to see it turn 500k. and it was only 387 to my door! thats about 30 bucks more than the Chinese plastic Napa one

Got the cab back on for the last time hopefully! radiator in, air-air in, front clip on.............

today will be finish t-case shifter that hangs off the trans versus the body how the dodge was. and brake/clutch master cylinders.

montanatrout
03-08-2010, 02:20 PM
had a couple slow days then on sunday a bunch came together.

-I got the Dodge clutch master and slave in,
-the Dodge hydrobooster in, had to beef up the fire wall for the clutch and build -a adapter plate so the stock M.C. support would do its job,
-r. driveshaft in,
-f. driveshaft in,
-radiator-air to air- a/c condester in for the last time,
-pipeing for the turbo (I had to shorten them both about 2") radiator hoses fit perfect,
-fan shroud fit perfect with a little trimming off the bottom (it sits about 2" higher than in a dodge)
-floor mat back in with insulation
-borgeson universal steering shaft in

-it doesnt look like the stock A/C box that goes on the firewall will fit very easy, looking into mabey trying a chevy system that all goes under dash

- T-case shifter is done, (built from a Chevy t-case shifter!) I built a girdle type thing to support the shifter off the body, like the dodge. Before i put the body on for the last time i built the shifter to hang off the trans, I had to scrap that idea cuz the lever had too much throw at the floor, no shifter boot could work. I am happy with this, its strong and works

- trans tunnel is cut out, patched and insulated like the rest of the cab........coated with spray can bed liner......looks good

The 37's tow fine, they have a wieght cap of 3700 or something, and my new 12 bolts match that cap.,where the 8 bolts are like 2800. the only draw back is the loss in torque with 3.55s, really thinkin about going to 4.10s as i will be running mostly 37's from here on out

PROJECTJUNKIE

For the AC, look into an indash aftermarket system, lots of 70s fords are running around with them. My highboy came with one, it's behind the glovebox, and takes up most of the glovebox, but the controls and the vents are all in the dash. I've heard that these worked way better than the factory units. This is the setup in my 75 with a cummins. That truck was going to get my 4dr cab, but this week I picked up a 95 ram rollover, cummins, 5spd, 4wd at auction. If the frame is straight, I'll be building a second truck and copying some of your ideas:p

The truck looks awesome. this is what i have wanted to do for a long time.

Kevin and Dan up at Valair are awesome to deal with. Me and my buddy went up there to their shop to put the first ever dual disc valair made for an OBS stroke into his truck. Well needless to say we had the tranny in and out of the truck 8 times that day but it just was not right, and when it was time to go Dan gave us a BRAND NEW single disc full feramic clutch to put in and drive on while he fixed the dual disc issues. That was last year, and needless to say that dual disc is fawken sweet when we got it back about a month later. They have some of THE best customer service.

really, (someone will correct me i'm sure!) the 8 bolts have something like a 2800 pound weight rating, and the 12's have a 3200 to match the 37" radials weight cap. plus a different design, the outer piece is one with the 8 lug WMS instead of having the inside part as the WMS and a way better O-ring surface

ITS ALIVE! Ive been working on it as much as I can lately and its paying off. The wiring seem to be right but i have a hard starting issue. I am only running on one optima, so i think its a low voltage at starting thing, i think, 9.6v seems pretty low during start. I will go get a new battery lug for the second one tomorrow and hopefully it will cure. It runs great when running, just starts hard.

I built some shock hoops since my old setup would not work with the axle moved forward

DUHHHH! with the Painless 18 fuse hot rod wire harness i got to re-wire the cab and some other stuff, which i might add went pretty painless! anyway, i used the electric fuel pump wire for my (ing.+) for the cummins computer. well I'm a big dummy:shaking: cuz the fuel pump wasnt getting power while cranking which wansnt giving the computer the switched 12v. that it wanted. it was getting all the other power to the VP-44 and stuff, but that explains the hard starting.

i sure would think so Justin but i have the painless kit hooked to the ford ignition switch the way they want.?????? I rewired my lift pump for the same problem. The cummins computer tells the lift pump when to turn on and off, and it wasnt pumping while cranking. I used the "87a" on my VP-44 relay, so now when the key is on, the pump is pumping:D

got the tach workin, couldn't find anyone to tell me how many pulses per rev., so i narrowed it down the hard/long way. The cam has 72 teeth, with one sensor pickup. we didnt know if the sensor worked off the teeth or the one pickup. the one tooth seems to be the pickup, because for one full rotation of the cam the crank moves two revs. I put this code into the isspro tach, and badaboom! its idles at 750 on the tach(thats good) and seems to follow the rpm by sound and footfeed. I guess untill i get real numbers from someone this will work. By the way the tach wire for a 24 valve cummins is pin 45 on the ECM (GRY/BLK on the plug on the top of the engine on firewall. If you rebody a vehicle you have to retitle it in Montana? Technically, here in California at least, it would still be registered the same as if it still had the Dodge body on it. California pretty much goes by chassis and engine. If you register a vehicle it will be titled (year model) by the chassis number (the VIN would remain the same) and if you upgrade the engine (on a vehicle new enough to be covered by emissions testing) you will be held to the emissions standards of the newer engine. Upgrades are allowed to an engine if it reduces emissions and improves efficiency (like changing from carb to FI).

I hope your trip goes well! Anxious to see the finished product.

wheelin66bronco
04-16-2010, 02:03 PM
Ya, Montana is wierd about titles. Here the title goes with the vin, and the vin says what vehicle it is. Chris sold his cab with the title. He bought his cab at a junk yard that didn't have a title for it. So he's bacially getting a title for a 79 Ford which is perfect.
I'll try to upload the most recent pics tomorrow.

04-16-2010, 04:32 PM
Wow, that opens up some cool possibilities. I like those laws. What happens when the truck is so early it does not have a VIN, just go by the body number? You can rebody any new truck and register it as the earlier year, thats great! Wish you could do that here. You could avoid smog laws completely.

I'm pretty sure in CA if you show up with a truck that looks like a 79 Ford (or whatever) and a matching title, they aren't gonna care what frame is under it. It will be titled as a 79. Now, with the diesel, you'd have to get the title changed to reflect the diesel which shouldn't be a biggie, since in this case, the diesel is 2 decades NEWER than the truck. While the state may technically care where the frame came from, I would never tell them I did it. It would confuse the DMV retard and it would no doubt cause you nightmares.

What you'd want to do in this case is have DMV issue you a new VIN BEFORE you decide to modify the vehicle. Old vehicles with no VIN typically used the block number which sucks, because the original engine is rarely with a 40+ year old vehicle. Once you had your title in hand, modify the vehicle at will. Sorry, enough of the hijack.

I agree if he bought a cab from a wrecking yard with a VIN and a title all would go as you say. Remember if you are registering a special construction or salvage vehicle in California it will probably have to go to a referee station for a thorough check over.

Montana is really easy to deal with when it comes titles. I would take a guess that he got a bonded title for it.

As far as vehicle inspections, as long as the paperwork is in order it is what you say it is.

as far as the insulation and noise.... it has the stock behind the firewall insulation, and i used that foil faced 1/2" thick on the engine side of the firewall, the entire floor, roof, and doors. I know you have a color picked out, I like to two tone blue combo of the drivers door and left front fender. Maybe a two tone on your original color choice with a lighter silver in the middle? I just think these body style Fords lend themselves to the two tone look easily.

I don't know the guy and have no horse in this race, but I took his comment as "tongue in cheek." Maybe I am wrong. I think you guys should see a doctor about getting something to reduce the swelling in your piss flaps. Now if he was serious, then continue. Just saying...

Enjoying the build, looking like it is going to be one hell of a truck when you are fully done.

Our friend Doug made this bitchin trophy thing for tyson "mister luck"

The Fodge impressed me. It did really good for being open diffs with 3.55's. I think before too long i will be doing some 4.10's, and hopefully a ARB for the rear, since the 37's will be the tire that is on it 99% of the time. The 3.55s are good unloaded on the hiway, but towing and offroad the 4.10s is where its at

this was the only place i needed a tug

Great seeing the Fodge in person. You did great open-open considering the places you were going...especially with hard RTII's!!

Not discounting your truck, but I think a good bit of skill was involved, too!

i bumped a tree up at blacktail on one of those narrow bypasses around a hole, found that it pushed the stock bumper back and hit my driver fender and put a little crease in it. oh well. it pushed back pretty easy.those Autofab baja fenders sure would look sweet!!!!!!!too bad a pair is about $600

I think $600 towards that ARB might not look as cool as the glass but might be a little more functional. Too bad you are leaving so soon, a full size diesel wheeling day will have to wait till you get back in the fall.

?????????????????cali isnt all its puffed up to be? i think we all hinted to that long ago :) Montana always welcomes back a good friend. i'll call ya soon

The thumb story goes like this...7am, pulled in the driveway after running a few errands, went to hook up this little trailer i had setting at the end of the road with free tires on it. the trailer is small you dont need a tounge jack, so i picked it up to set it on the hitch, the trailer rolled into a little hole, pinching my thumb between the trailer hitch and the flatbed of the Fodge. pop there goes the thumb. barlly scratched the paint. it was totlally cut off exept for a small amount of skin towards the web, which just happens to be where the tennon and nerves run, i got lucky. its healling great. i'd put up a pic but i dont have a laptop yet.
