I am sticking with my standard shackle set up...

I have been fiddle farting around for almost 2 months with a broken frame to spring mount. Waiting on a friend to clear some time from his schedule to help me do a RS conversion... I had all the parts done all the leg work even...

Well this morning I said screw it - limped it over to my brother inlaws house (he has electricty in his garage - all I have is a crappy apartment) - plugged in my junky little 110V Mig Welder and welded the piss out of it! So it will stay standard shackle for who knows how long.

After thinking about it for a long damn time I figured I'd rather be wheeling it than waiting to fix it. Also I ordered my high steer arms last week so I really only needed one engineering project on the table at a time.

:D :D :D
not all rigs have RS.
some of us resemble stock - with about 15" of lift.

hell yha.. !
who needs fancy fab work when you can let the factory do it for ya!
oh, yha.. thats right.. i did.. shackle's still in front but when the springs got wet they got longer.. lol... gota love them 44044's!

Yeahhhhh....WELD IT.

Like the above said, nothing wrong with leaving some things alone...change it only if you are ready and really need to.

My rig wheels O.K. and it is SUA, no RS, and such...I don't know your driving skills but things should happen in progression...get used to a stock rig, learn what it can do, change a little bit, learn what that can do etc, etc, etc.

Shoot, you might do the RS and deciede that you hate it?:)

I think I am just lucky I don't have anything that I felt comfortable welding 1/4 steel to my frame with... Otherwise the RS would have been done long ago...

I am sure I will be happy staying the way it is/was.

Now lets wheel! October 18-20th Rochester, MN.... See you there!

An RS will only improve your roadability. I don't think there is any off road advantage other than increasing your wheel base a bit by sliding the axle forward in the process.

Yeah, I'm doing the 44044 and standard shackles, it almost won't fit in the garage now. :)

S/R is cool tho, I ran one on my Samurai a couple years back.

Do what you can, and wheel the piss out of it!;)

Uh, well I guess the perches are to high.. :)
Or my garage door is lower than yours.

So much for building my rig so my dogs can jump in. Oh well, such is life..

Good job!! Unless you had a compelling reason to do otherwise, keep it simple, and RS definitely is not simple!!!

Now go wheel it!

For simplicity I guess you really can't beat the factory set up - And it did survive 31 years of us before it gave up.... Hopefully I can get another 30 years out of it!

I gussetted my spring hangers to keep them from shearing off.

Cheap, easy. Results in a bent spring if you hit something too hard, but better a bent spring than a ripped off spring mount resulting in sheet metal resting on rubber....

Is that just a piece of square stock welded in there?

I was thinking somethng that would meet at the bottom edge of the spring mount and angle back about 4-5 inches - act as a gusset and a skid, and work sliding either direction.

Yep. Had some scrap square stock, so I cut to angle, and welded it on. It comes to the bottom lip of the hanger, although it does not look like it in the picture. I thought of a more oblique angle, to help with sliding, but this was simple and quick.
