This is the latest book by Stephen Hunter. He wrote Point of Impact, the book that the movie Shooter was based on. I, Sniper is another book featuring Bob Lee Swagger, the main character in Shooter. This is the first of his books that I have read but it's very good. Obviously, it is heavily gun related, all of it fairly accurate.
The only thing that stood out to me was the statement repeated in the book that the 168 SMK is the snipers 30 cal bullet of choice. It's been my experience that most people who shoot in distances that can be measured by odometers, think the 168 is not so hot, especially over 800 yards. Most folks I know that shoot SMK's shoot 155's or 175's. The other was that that same 168 was "traveling at a blistering 2300 FPS." Hmmph, that bullet is easily capable of 2700 fps.
This book had lead characters that were quite obviously supposed to be Jane Fonda, Ted Turner, Bernadine Doern and Bill Ayers. In addition, the guy who is supposed to be the killer sniper is named Carl Hitchcock, a marine sniper who had the most kills in Vietnam. I wonder how he got license to make these characters follow those they were so obviously based on, especially Hitchcock.
Anyhow, great action, heavy firearms action and very realistic firearms action. I give it two thumbs up for OSR related fiction.
