: Ford 9" question

I've got a chance to buy a 9" from a guy and have a ??? The rear shafts are out and are differing lengths (diff. by about 2"). Is this a problem??? I measured from the flanges to the outside edges of the centersection and those measurements are within 3/8" of each other. In that sense, it seemed like a centered diff, but when we pulled the shafts, they were different.

BTW, the axle is 28 spline, big bearing, and the plan is run 35 spline and 36's or 38's. I'll probably end up having Moser or Dutchman build shafts for it.

Thanks and :flipoff2:

What do you mean a 'chance'? You've made the commitment you fawkin noob! :flipoff2: :D

I think that's it ok, you should buy it anyway, my rims too! (whoops, I mean you should buy some rims if this guy has them. :D )

They are supposed to be different lengths, at least that's what my Early Bronco 9" is. I've been running 28 spline shafts with 35's, a spool and 5.38's behind an SM420 and a 4cyl for over a year now with no problems, but I'm jumping up to 31 spline when I build a new full floater 9" this winter.

This will go behind a 304/T18/D300 combo FWIW.

No shiat from you Indy or I'll go full width too and you'll have a new boat anchor :flipoff2: :D

Yes, they will be slightly different lengths. The actual diff will be centered though. Actually, it's kinda good cause you can't help but put them in the correct way. Take the punkin out, look at it closely and you will see why they are different lengths. I just put one in back of my 85 runner. :D:D 33 spline Curries with a full spool and 543 gears. (Thanks, Gearman)... :D

(I swear I'm gonna get it going again soon):(

A friend of mine was down at the ARB factory and saw a 35 spline 9in air locker (he actually saw two of them). They where in the process of strength testing them.

So I guess ARB is going to sell these things.

From what I've seen, in general:
Truck 9" rears are usually same-length axle shafts. Vans too.
Car 9" rears are usually different length. Passenger side is longer.

I don't know why; I have a few guesses, but nothing from the horse's mouth, so I'll stay outta the speculation market. I do know from measuring, a centered rear pinion puts the axles a couple inches off of each other; same-length axles puts the pinion off center by an inch or two.

And this is very specifically not gospel, just a trend that I've noticed under lotsa cars-n-trucks when junkyard browsing.

Thanks for the replies...

I guess my main consideration was whether the yokes would line up, ie centered D300 yoke versus offset rear.

I guess it would be nice too if the shafts were the same so I would only need one spare. Going 35 spline would solve that :D

yea i second that my EB 9 has different length shafts.. one has to be longer to keep the diff centered and still reach past the pinion gear and thorugh the ring gear to get to the carrier or in my case the spool...... or at least thats my guess..
my moser shafts were a little long like .25 inches, but my spool is splined all the way through so without the cross pin i figured i have room for the extra length..

Nah, I didn't have it sold.

NOTE TO ALL: When Meyer comes over to your house, watch him, he'll talk your ear off and have you rethinking your entire setup! :flipoff2:

I got what I paid, so it's all good. Plus, you hauled away my trash for me. :flipoff2:

I third that. Not the same length. Not an issue. Been Running 31 alloys from dutchman with 36" sx's in an EB with no issue. Would go 35 spline if I did it again though. Only problem then is the weak spot is the housing...Damn Butt weld on the flanges...Butt weld... butt weld... butt plug

Peace :rasta:

I have been running a 9 inch w/ 4.56 + spool and moser 31 splines and 38's w/ no problems back there . My .02

I prefer the "banjo" housing comapred to the "pumpkin" housing that came in the Eb's. I have noticed the same trend that Scott has. My banjo 9" out of a truck (slightly offset) has the same length shafts and the DL is not a big deal from my centered toy case output.

a freind goes through 35 spline axles like ass wipe with 36s and a 4.0 auto but then again they dont call him jeepmauler for nothing:flipoff2:
