: Convince me
Phoenix Fire 02-21-2010, 04:04 PM OK, parked in my drive way is an '88 very modded cherokee, and a '97 100% stock D1. One of these 2 has never left the pavement. My wife would much rather have something else (P/U truck) but at the same time will not let me take hers wheeling. I have been looking around for a rover of my own. Convince me on 2 things, 1 why i SHOULD make the switch to from jeep to rover, and 2, D1 or RRC. I like the D1 (obviously have driven one, wifeys) but i like the looks and size of the RRC. Is there any performance difference on or off road between the RRC and D1? It wont happen this year, need to save up to buy either, and also get the EEP into decent sale condition. so, in short, switch to rover? D1 or RRC?
Obviously i will get biased opinions here, i know this.
PTSchram 02-21-2010, 04:50 PM It wont happen this year, need to save up to buy either.
I have acquired five Rovers in the past year and have spent less than $1500 doing it. Three RRCs, a DI and a DII. One of them even ran when I bought it:flipoff2: (it still doesn't move under it's own power yet, but I haven't had it that long).
C'mawn, they are cheap as chips these days! Get two, they don't really take up that much room (OK, maybe they do, but then you'll have an excuse to move to place where you can have room for them)

I think i might want to find a real job first, really hating these unemplyment checks (ok, some is better than nothing). THEN i will purchase. We originally bought the D1 because we have 5 kids and my wife hates mini vans and likes 4x4 but couldnt get the truck she really wanted. I may end up with her D1 if i can buy her the truck she wants. That would help the decision process. But other than that, which to go with, D1 or RRC, or tell me why i shouldnt stay with my cheep jeep?
BigBlueToy 02-21-2010, 05:35 PM The real question is... How the hell do you feed 5 kids on unemployment cheques? You wont get much for the D1, if you like it, keep it. It will be way easier to sell your Cherokee.
whatroad 02-21-2010, 07:12 PM Stick with the Jeep. The aftermarket is huge in comparison to Rover junk. You can buy just about everything for your Jeep at Napa( yes, I know you can buy SOME things for Rover too) any salvage yard will have Jeep parts 20 to 1 over Rover.
The H.O 4.0L six is just about bombproof, not so with ANY Rover V8. It just makes sense.
However, I own several of these British P.O.S.'s and turn wrenches on them for a living. I also own a CJ3B......
There is no rhyme or reason, just pick one.

hey i got rotors and pads from napa yesterday for my 04 DII. :flipoff2: wasn't expecting that, but it was worth the try and they actually had them.

if you need to be convinced you deserve a rover:flipoff2:
' a jeep thing?.....no i don't understand!'
Roverhound 02-22-2010, 03:36 AM if you need to be convinced you deserve a rover:flipoff2:

I was gong to say the opposite, if you have to ask, keep the Jeep.
PTSchram 02-22-2010, 05:00 AM If someone were to wander in here and not know what was going on, they would never think that any of us had near the affection for these silly trucks as one MUST have to put up with them.
Come to think of it, owning a Land Rover reminds me a lot of marriage :flipoff2:
Phoenix Fire 02-22-2010, 07:06 AM I hear that! So now, which to keep? If i keep the jeep i sell the rover for the truck my wife wants, if i keep the rover, *I* keep it, sell the jeep for the truck my wife wants... see where this is going? BTW, she wants a Dodge Ram 2500 Supercrew cab (4 full doors) 4x4 diesel, doesnt matter what year.
KevinNY 02-22-2010, 07:20 AM Why put thousands into a 1500 dollar truck to get it anywhere close to the truck you already wheel? Keep the jeep.
Clydesdale4x4 02-22-2010, 07:37 AM Then again, A: Everybody and their dog wheels an XJ; B: if ya wanna wheel it, doesn't matter what you have done to the XJ, it still won't be what you want.
Pimp the Heep out, buy her the Cumapart, and start your Disco build.
My humble $.02
PTSchram 02-22-2010, 08:14 AM BTW, she wants a Dodge Ram 2500 Supercrew cab (4 full doors) 4x4 diesel, doesnt matter what year.
Does she have a sister? :grinpimp:
Phoenix Fire 02-22-2010, 08:50 AM Does she have a sister? :grinpimp:
Yes she does, but she is a dizzy blonde who cant seem to find the 710 cap and is married to a european car mechanic. (my wife is the more intelligent and better looking red-head sister who likes 4x4!). My wife wants a truck she gets it, its just a matter of which to sell to get it. I still was contemplating selling the D1 to get a RRC.
The Stig 02-22-2010, 10:39 AM You will be able to get a newer D-1 much easier. They quit making RRC's in 95 I think. The fat ass on the RRC will be something you will have to deal with. Not that the Dsico is that much better in that dept. I say go Disco. What kind of wheeling do you do? Rocks, Woods. etc.?
The Jeep is cheap. I like rovers because I want to be different and creative. I dont want to just follow a road map to what everyone else has done. Also when I made the decision to go Rover it was because I was spending so mauch damn time welding ad strengthening the damn unibody on the Jeep that I thoght I would prefer to put my money into a full frame vehicle.
Phoenix Fire 02-22-2010, 11:10 AM I LOVE the different and creative aspect, thats always been me. Most of my wheeling is woods, not flat trails in the woods, but woods, powerlines, etc. not much for the rock crawling thing, never have been. I live in eastern NC, we have Uwharrie here that i still have not yet been too. Not much of a bogger either. I like trails, but with a challenege, technical stuff. I grew up wheeling in New England, there are no flat trails (or even roads), and i have been having a hard time finding places that offer the same chalenge as new england. It would be a DD, as i dont have the disposable income to have a 3rd vehicle to "play" with. I love the fact that my jeep is cheap to fix, and parts are readily available, but i dont like the fact that they are EVERYWHERE. I love the way the D1 rides, and that i just plain dont see many of them, but i do like the looks of the RR more. My only fear is the cost of maint/repairs on them and there is that "prince of darkness" thing about them too. In the 2 years i have had both (had many more jeeps before this one) neither has left me stranded, i drove the jeep home after an engine fire, but when the rover fails, it fails catstrophicly. I am sooo undecided as to which to sell...
Rover has 180K miles and is a '97 100% stock
Jeep has 117K miles and is a '88 decidedly NOT stock
MikeyD1 02-22-2010, 11:22 PM if your rover aready has 180k and is still going strong then your better than most of us haha. I say keep the rover and mod the bitch
don't buy the hype into rovers fail or they always break down it's all bullshit if looked after the rover will last just as long as any car if not longer.
my girlfriends grandfater had a D1 at 320,000 miles and the bitch was still going strong until he crashed it.
hoggyn 02-23-2010, 02:29 AM The fat ass on the RRC will be something you will have to deal with.
The rear overhang is exactly the same as the D1:confused:
PTSchram 02-23-2010, 04:21 AM if your rover aready has 180k and is still going strong then your better than most of us haha.
I have several with more than that and I'd not hesitate to drive them cross-country. What was it four, five years ago, I drove a '95 Disco wit 207K on it from Indiana to Colorado, wheeled it a week and drove it back home (and promptly replaced the front and rear diffs and a year later, the transmission and t-case, but it made it there and back and I had great fun).
If taken care of (and not a DII) they will last a long time. When they do break, there are ample used trucks and a strong aftermarket in the UK that looks like it will continue into the foreseeable future.
Hawkshot 02-23-2010, 10:08 PM I think i might want to find a real job first, really hating these unemplyment checks (ok, some is better than nothing). THEN i will purchase. . . if i can buy her the truck she wants. That would help the decision process.

If I follow this correctly you actually should be telling her that people in hell need ice water and that she needs to get over wanting a $15,000-$50,000 truck and drive the vehicles that you own. Go find a job and when you think you can afford to wheel a rover, sell your jeep so you can afford to fix the rover. :flipoff2:
Phoenix Fire 02-24-2010, 05:53 AM nah, i buy used crap. I've never spent more than $4500 on a vehicle and been pretty lucky to get some good deals and vehicles in pretty good condition. Example: the D1 I bought for her we only paid $1200 for, no major problems, just a few minor issues. The interior lights stopped working, and the plastic pokets on the doors are broken off, but thats it really, so i still think i got a good deal. I will try to find a good deal for her truck, but if i sell the (h)eep, it needs much work just to pass inspection.
