So I have a '87 Suburban 3/4 ton. I bought it with a 4" Tuff Country EZ-Ride lift with the dual shocks in the front. It has a shackle reversal too. The tires are BFG's 285/75/16's load range E. It is brutal on speed bumps. If I hit a speed bump going more than 3 mph it slams back down hard enough to knock out your fillings. On the freeway it does ok but it is just a little bouncy. Is there anything I can do? It is time for new shocks but will the right choice of new shocks help smooth out the ride or is there pretty much nothing I can do but deal with it? How about going with only 2 shocks in the front rather than 4? Or get some adjustible shocks and set them to soft dampening and a slower rebound? Any help or advice would be appreciated.

2x ditch the dual shocks.
how old is the lift? they soften with time and use.

I'm guessing the kit is at least a few years old. The shocks look like the original that went on with the kit but they don't look like they are 15 years old, ya know? I'm guessing 3-5 years but I could be off.
So going from dual shocks in each of the front corners to a single shock would help soften up the ride? Does anyone have a specific shock they've had good luck with on a 3/4 or 1 ton chevy solid axle?

It depends on how much your budget allows for shocks. You can get McBadass shocks for like $100 apiece or get pro-comp, rancho for around $30-$50 apiece. I just googled some and shopped around during my search.
X2 on ditching the duals. Ive heard their rougher than hell.

Well cool, I'm going to get out there in about an hour and pull off one shock from each side and see if it makes a difference. Not a complete solution, I know I need new shocks regardless, but we'll see if it gets me in the ball park.
The truck mostly see driving in town and on the freeway, but from time to time I have taken it out on some of the older logging roads here in the Cascades and I gotta say, it did pretty well for a big girl.

So I managed to score 4 mildly used Dick Cepek shocks from a guy on Craigslist. They came off another Suburban with a 4" lift. So I pulled off all 6 shocks on my truck and replaced them with the 4 Cepek shocks and what a difference. It's still a 3/4 ton 4x4 Chevy, so it still rides a little stiff, but the new (relatively) shocks smoothed out the ride considerably. Speed bumps aren't as bone-jarringly harsh and it's smoother on the streets too. Thanks guys for the suggestion on ditching the dual shocks up front. :grinpimp:
