: Can you redrill an SJ 6x5.5 to an XJ 5x4.5?

I have a waggy axle that I am putting under my XJ. The only thing I have left to figure out is the bolt pattern situation (6x5.5 to 5x4.5). Is there enough there to redrill, or should I just get adapters ($180 ouch!)?

Well it might help if you tell us what axle this is and if its front or rear.

Not sure if you can do this yourself, but if you're going to pay to have it done, it may just be easier to do the adapter thing. You could check Moser's site, but it gets costly to redrill axles/drums etc.

I went the other way, 5x4.5 to 6x5.5....

Going between these lugs means at least one lug will be too close to not compromise integrity of the lug hole without plugging an old hole. You'll either get soaked on buying a 2-piece spacer (for the same reason) , or you can send your shafts to Dutchman to have them relugged for 5x4.5 at $85 per shaft. I chose the latter route; Dutchman is FAST and QUALITY work.

Sorry, it's for the rear and it's a D44.

That's not a bad idea. The spacers would run me $90 a side. I will have to look into that.

I think Moser does it for $30 perside without plugging the old holes, 6 on 5.5 to 5 on 5.5 you can do that, but 5 on 4.5 you can't, I think they get another $30 to plug up the holes, so for $120 you could have 5 on 4.5 shafts.

I swapped in a waggy 44 and sent the shafts to Moser to have them changed from 6 to 5 on 5-1/2. They were about $85 for the pair to plug, redrill and ship back. They were back in less than a week from when I sent them too. Just be sure to specify if you want threaded studs or shouldered studs installed.

As a side note for going to 5 on 5-1/2, I found that late 90's Dodge rear drums are a perfect fit. They are $45 whereas the waggy drums are $75. Moser also charges $30 per drum to plug and redrill so I saved $120 or so.

Good tip on the drum swap...

Dutchman only charges $35/pair to redrill, btw. Or you can template your drilling needs with a piece of cardboard and do it yourself..
