I tweeked the housing on my rear ih 44 last weekend.
Am am running 35's & I hammered it to hard up a nasty hillclimb and I guess that is what bent the shit out of it.

Anyway, I have ran a 44 Narrow track rear for a while and never had any issues until I put this ih one in.

Other than a 60 (which I dont think I need for 35's) Should I look for in a option. The toyata axle looks promising, so does a 9".

I could basicly get a 9" out of a 79 f150 for free. I know its a heap wider and has a lower pinion than what I am running but who cares.

Is the 9" a viable choice or should I find something better. I dont know much about ford axles but from what I have read here in stock form the 3rd members are crap right?

I was also told maybe a wagoneer rear 44 may work better for me. I never broke a shaft or R&P Just this damn housing.

O well, throw me your ideas.

I've looked into the 9" option lately. If you do, get a big bearing and 31 splines. I think people run those with 35's without a problem. Good clearance too.

Seeings you already have everything you need for a 44 it seems wisest to me to have that thing retubed with some .5" wall tubes.

I agree.
Why spend all the time and money on a new axle assembly if you just need to retube the one you have.

Get a new one and weld a big truss on top of it. It isn't worth switching to a 9", and re-tubing can be $$$ if you can't do it yourself. Scout axles are cheap and plentiful, just get another.

the housing on this 44 is gone it bent there also.

I am looking at my options as far as trussing another scout 44.

I wasted 2 housings in 3 months this summer. Glad I'm not the only one that was having problems with my Scout housings. I say "was" because I am building a 60-2 from a J-truck now and it will be trussed.

Actually I am going to get a ff 60 somtime this winter and narrow it down myself kinda as a winter project.

For now though another 44 will have to take its place. I pulled that "No wheeling" shit last winter and it sucked. I tender foot it around if I have to.


tell me about this 60-2 is it really worth it over the 44? Not being crititcal, I just dont know shit about them.

I was planning on getting a 14 bolt, but came across this for cheap. It is a semi floater, standard D60 center section, 35 spline 1.5" shafts w/ 5 on 5.5 lug pattern(69-73). The axle tubes are 2.75" and I believe 5/16" thick. The tubes are a little thin but I will be trussing it. I really didnt want to get new 8 lug wheels and swap the outers on my waggy front for 8 lug. My 60-2 was about 65.5" wide and off set to pass. side. I will be narrowing 3" out of the long side and have the shaft cut down and resplined. Thats about all I know, they are a little hard to come by, I have only seen one other, that was in a J-4000. I just got mine 2 weeks ago and it will be a winter project. I plan to get another scout housing to get me rolling again.

I'm not really up on the travel-alls 60-2's, but I believe they are 30 spline 1.3" shafts, about 62" wide, and should have a centered pumkin. I think there are a few guys over on the IH board running them.
Yes, standard 60 3rd member. Mine came with 4:10 gears, but I'm running 4:56. I think I'm going to spool it. Check a tread by me asking for "anyone running a 60-2?" it is from about 3 weeks ago. Some good info there.

I think I am sending the housing and shaft to Maxle Eng. in Rapid City. If you cut it down to equal length shafts it will be around 58-59" wide. I want to run a little wider. Not sure that cutting and resplining is the way to go, as it will most likely weaken the splines on the cut shaft. I'm gonna try to get by for a while w/o spares, then when I get some cash order some custom shafts and use the stockers for spares. I only run 35's w/ 258. I never broke a 30 spine D44 shaft, I twisted splines on 2 or 3 and bent one pretty bad. These 35 spline shafts make the D44 shaft look like a toothpick. The 60 shafts are 1.5" at the splines and get bigger from there, up to about 1.75 at the bearing. They are :cool:

I'd just try to find a Scout 44...They are cheap and plentiful and it would bolt up fairly easily. Good luck...

IH T-all rears are thin tubed, 63 wide, 5 x 5.5, 60 center section and 44 tubes and bearings 30 spline stock. You can upgrade them to 35 spline

Find your self an 8.8 from a 95 up explorer with rear disks....
