The first time you loaded up the axle shaft it would probably break at the weld. They are heat treat and if you welded it....

What the heck kind of question was that anyway? A newbie like me is supposed to ask that...

I think high5 and crew are wrong ;).

You should weld it up,take it out and hammer it. Please take detailed notes as I intend to start a poll on how many feet you get before welded shaft goes boom...

we welded a shaft a back last winter.
Buddy of mine showd up at the house with a busted d-44 front shaft under his scout, broke right @ the axle seal surface. welded it back together, spun the weld down on the lathe so the seal would seal again and threw it back in. That shaft lasted another 4 months of HARD wheeling, lasted longer than any of the previous d-44 shafts that he's had in there,(well... except for the new warns). i say weld it.. what do you have to loose?:flipoff2:

I know another guy that snapped a D44 rear shaft, he pulled it apart, ground it down to a point, lined up both pieces and welded away. That thing is still holding 1 year later.
