: Snorkle designs
Jason M 10-09-2002, 10:22 AM Since installing the turbo I need ot make sure that my intake temps are below the normal underhood temps of a cruiser. So I figure why not jsut do a snorkle. Does anyone have any good designs for a snorkle that are reasonably durable and still allow me to fold and/or remove the windshield on my 40??
Box Rocket 10-09-2002, 12:01 PM I have seen a couple different ways of doing this that seem to work ok.
There are a few guys here in Utah that used the regular Safari Snorkel that ARB sells and had a local place modify the snorkel so that just after the bend where the snorkel starts to go vertical it has a short 45* jog in it that sets it out a little wider to clear the windshield frame. The same type of ABS plastic was used and the snorkel was cut and the new peice "welded" in. They also modified (or built their own) upper bracket for the snorkel. The one that normally attaches to the upper half of the windshield hinge. The just made it longer so it can attach to the lower part of the hinge so the windshield can go down.
The other approach I've seen was on a very inexpensive PVC snorkel. A custom bracket and hose clamp held the upper section to the windshield frame and it entered the engine compartment in the normal location, but there was approx 8" of heavy flex hose that connected the horizontal pipe to the vertical one on the windshield frame so that the snorkel folded down with the windshield. Not the best solution but it seemed to work.
rugburn 10-09-2002, 01:27 PM Jason,
You could use a flexible bellow, like a way cover on a milling machine or simply a CV boot of the same OD as your snorkle itself.
McMaster Carr has them.

60seriesguy 10-09-2002, 03:32 PM Custom snorkels are very common in Venezuela, where fabrication is cheap but imported accessories aren't. Most use variations of flexible hose and sections of pipe, although I've seen some trick all-pipe ones. A very clean way of doing a custom snorkel is to use the "trumpet" portion of the Safari snorkel, which can be bought separately, I may have some good pictures of one done like this.
Another VERY trick little modification I saw on an FJ40 at the Toyota Museum gig in CA was a quick disconnect bracket that allowed for the dropping of the windshield.

Thanks Henry...
60seriesguy 10-09-2002, 03:44 PM Picture collection is up to 20,000+ Land Cruiser (and related) pictures, so it will take me some time to sort through them! (8 CD's)...
I'll do my best!

Jason M 10-09-2002, 03:46 PM Just make copies of the CD's and send them to me ;)
:p
again, thanks a lot!!!
Box Rocket 10-09-2002, 04:16 PM Here's the custom snorkel I made for my minitruck. I used the ARB air ram, ABS pipe and heavy flex hose. Worked out real well. Bight give you a few ideas. Sorry it's not on a 40. It actually went through the hood instead of the fender on this particular design.
Anyway, this incorporates some of Henry's ideas of the pipe/flexhose/air ram.

You can buy the snorkle for $5500, it includes a 1976 FJ-55 ;)

BJ On Roids 10-09-2002, 04:31 PM :flipoff2: i saw this poser and straight away thought of your snorkel jason :flipoff2:
three inch mandrel bent stainless, polished, to fold windshield all you do is attach the mounting bracket to the lower portion of the hinge EASY
get an exhaust shop to bend you one, out of 2.5 or 3" and paint it black!! it will be good enough
also safari sell them over here for $400, bolt onto the landcruiser, made out of plastic, look pretty, but not for hard wheeling!!
okay....can't upload the pics at the moment, maybe the old pbb, is having some dramas
ill try again later its definitely BLING BLING, or do you want me to just email it to you :D

There is some little dude in Atlanta that I met at GSMTR that has a shop that makes those snorkles....he uses a mini van airbox inside the engine compartment and dryer hose for the tube.

Hi Jason
I just found this picture on the website of Sealandsafari (http://www.sealandsafari.com) and thought this might be a good one. I'm gonna copy this for my troopie, but with an original air ram.http://www.sealandsafari.com/images_catalogue/snorkel/snorkel-bj4.jpg
I hope this will help you a bit further.
Oh and by the way, in Germany there's a guy with a supercharged 2F and it didn't break, so you will be okay.
Mark
BigFatIronPig 10-20-2002, 08:59 AM Turbo, Supercharging? where can i find info/parts and how much $$$. im assuming this is all for a 2F.

looks cool ;)
bigtoyfreak 10-20-2002, 10:15 PM I had an exhaust shop bend some 3" aluminized pipe for me, attached it to the bottom of my windshield frame hinge. The added bonus of making it out of metal, is it saves the the windshield if you flop it on the that side, the PVC shit tube wouldn't hold up as well. Mine has proved it's self a few times.
