Wife was driving home one night and the engine started to overheat. She pulled over and called me to let me know. I put 3 gallons of antifreeze in it to get her home but it was gone in about two minutes. Had it towed to the dealer and they said it was something loose in the back of the motor. They tightened it up and added fluid but engine had indications of blown head gaskets. Said it would be $1400 to fix. Said the heads have to be resurfaced, head bolts have to be replaced because they stretch and the gasket kit alone is around $280. My question is how hard is it to do this on your own? Iv'e built some 350's in my time but this ain't no 350. Do i need to have the heads resurfaced and the bolts replaced? Is a 350 swap something that can be done easily if i decided to go that route? Need some info guys! Thanks!

lol.. actualy its probably ezer in a lot of ways.. and harder in others(heads are heavy!)
if it was me, id get a top end gasket kit from felpro, and do it my self.. you'd be out about $100 for gaskets, and what ever it cost's for machine work. i wouldnt shave those heads any more than apsalutly needed! i did this for a friend, i had a spare set of heads ready to go, start to finish was about 4 hours..
oh and yes, if it is a newer motor (cant remember the exact year) it uses torque to yeald head bolts and they will need to be replaced.
I'm dealing with 6.2 issues right now myself.
You can get a complete fel-pro gasket set for under 100 bucks. The heads are a pain to get to due to the injector lines but the rest is a breeze. They are heavy.
The head bolts should be replaced and it is a good idea but a lot of people tell me they get by on the old set, I'm going to invest in a set they are also under 100 dollars. Cheap insurance in my eyes.

Any special tips to removing the heads? Someone mentioned injector lines can be a pain. Are there any good do-it-yourself manuals out there? Can i get the felpro kit from a local autoparts store or do i need to order from somewhere special? Thanks!

Make sure you get the heads cleaned and magnafluxed before any machining is done. More than likely they are cracked and will need to be replaced.
