: Need info on re-tubing a d60 ( Search Foo fails me)
CJHeap 03-01-2010, 03:58 PM I have been searching and have found little. Is there a thread or a build ?
I have a HP60 and need to re tube it so it is a pass side drop and build it up with alloy 35 spline outers.
A HP D60 build thread would be great.
Thanks in advance.

Drill out plug welds, press/pull out tubes. Put back into housing, weld.
dan58 03-02-2010, 05:17 AM I looked at doing the same thing. Buying an import Rock Jock center section and the tubes ends up being a whole lot easier in the long run.

You obviously didn't notice that the OP edited the post. It said drivers drop originally.

My Typo.
But the posters were being sarcastic.
I remember a good thread a while back that showed how to get the tubes out and knuckles off without damage.
I had seen the write up that sleeved the short tube but was not sure about how that stacked up against new tubes.
customcreationsllc 03-04-2010, 11:51 AM I did exactly what your looking for I took a HP Ford dana 60 dricer side drop and made it into a passanger side drop for a CJ. I also made one a center diff for a rear axle and just locked out the steering for now so I can go 4 wheel steering down the road.
You can drill out to rosettes and press the tube out but that is a pain you need a big press and you end up destroying some of the tube.
You don't want to press accross the houseing will deform the housing.
If you do it you need or press through the housing and support it right near the tube goes in.
Don't do this. looks like he is supporting the other side of the housing it will deform the housing itself. Remember the case spreader says no more than .020" or you will destroy th housing.

This is how I do it.
I was also shortening my axle at the same time so I just cut the long side down to length I needed and pressed the C back on. Cs are reversable right left don't matter.
To get the C off, forget about trying to use a press I've heard people using 50ton presses with no luck.
Take a sawsall and cut a section out and the tube falls right out. Obviously grind down the weld.
Hone out the C then use a sledge hammer to press the C back on.
To Align the other side tube to tube you need to cut them to length.
I have a lathe so I make sleaves the press into one side then I pluge weld it so it doesn't slide anymore and press on the other side fully weld it up your done
I've also heard of people usig exhaust expanders to center the axle tubes.
Good luck let us know how it goes.
I can cut down an axle around 2-3 hrs per side not that hard once you know what width and angle you want.
Also at that you can set whatever pinion angle/caster angle you want.
