: ZR2 suspension package question
Tim Smith 10-09-2002, 12:17 PM I did a search and the only answer I found for sure is that the Z package has an 8.5 axle instead of 7.5 axle.
What else is a different part from the regular LS to the Z suspension package? I am wondering if it is worth it to get the 5K Z package or just buy an LS and upgrade. Are the brakes bigger? Are the control arms longer? Shocks tougher? Etc.
A list would be beautiful.

Tim Smith 10-09-2002, 12:25 PM Thanks a bunch.
IMO, it is worth the Z package. :D
FYRMAN 10-09-2002, 07:10 PM ZR2 is really worth the price... It is physically wider, comes factory with 31" tires and other "offroad" type add ons.
Oxblood 10-09-2002, 08:07 PM I own a ZR2 Blazer. the rear axle is wider, the frame is beefed up, and it is also wider in the front where the A-arms attach. they say it has an "enhanced" front differential, and mine came with 4 wheel disk, but I think that might have been standard for all trucks of that year. The only thing I do not like about the new chevy 4wd vehicles are that the ones with auto trac do not have a front driveshaft disconnect. it still spins even in 2wd. the disconnect is only at the front differential. other than that, I love my Z. Oh yeah, they come with bilstein shocks too.:flipoff2:
Oxblood 10-09-2002, 08:09 PM One other thing was that my came with carbon fiber skid plates all around. I know some other years come with either steel or aluminum. my is a 99 1/2, I've heard some trash talk the skid plates, but usually it was from people who didn't have them. I have been high centered on the Tcase skid before and not cracks or anything. they are VERY light but tuff as hell, and they don't rust:cool:
1TFROT 10-09-2002, 09:55 PM I have to agree.
the Z package is nice if you're looking for capability right off the showroom floor. the corp 10 bolt 8.5" 30 spline is a good axle for the light truck (for stock). has good GC and great tires for a stock vehicle. the composite skids are fairly tough. I've been on mine quite a few times and they have not let me down yet.
well worth the extra $ IMO. I have one as well. it's not quite stock any more and it's getting farther away from it hopefully soon.
good luck
xtrm-s10 10-09-2002, 11:28 PM steve you going to go SFA some time soon? You will be happy with it. Just dont do the D30 thing go D44 atleast, use a selctable locker if you can or go full spool front and rear. You can unlock the front hubs for the street. It workes for me.

don't worry about that D30 ;)
I'll most likely either be doing a D60/9" or a set of 60s. I may have to go 44/9" depending on $ at the time. we should've started on it already, but some major things came up, therefore pushing me back quite a bit.
I'll probably spool the rear and run a lockright up front (save a little $) it'll definitely be dual locked somehow.
can't wait to start on it. :D

You can unlock the front, but what about the rear. I drive mine everyday and the detroit is bad enough. I think Steve drives his on an everyday basis as well. I couldn't imagine driving it everyday with a spool out back. At least with the detroit, I can get my momentum going and turn without using the pedal to keep my tires from burning up. I take it you don't drive your rig every day on the road. If you did, you wouldn't be giving advice to others about using them on the roads. I don't mean to be rude dude, I respect your opinions. ;)
I know a detroit is expensive, but a spool is defenitely not for the pavement. Well, unless you have the cash for new tires every few months. :D
xtrm-s10 10-10-2002, 06:19 PM Shaw the spool is not bad at all dont even know it is there. As for the tires well new boggers every 5 mths. The front ones wear out before the rear. So that is 1,000.00 or so they get cheaper as I buy them, price match and beat there own price.
drnut 10-11-2002, 09:51 PM I will most likly get flamed but what the hell... :flipoff2: If you are going to spend the $$$ for a show room off-road rig. I would look at the Toyota Tacoma TRD 4x4 truck with the V6. I have seen these trucks do some amazing things in stock form and the TRD package gets you the rear electric locker. Also look at www.tacomaterritory.com. They have ALOT of info on these rigs. The second vechical i would look at is the Jeep Rubicon. Just do a general search and you will see what i mean... Its the most capable show room rig on the market right now.. also the rariest. Don't get me wrong the Chevys with the ZR2s are kick ass rigs just not really up to snuff like the Toyota or the Jeep. I would not recommend you buying an LS and building it up. You will spend some serious cash and it will just meet the stock Jeep in off-road capability. I have looked into possibly building my 2001 LT Blazer but have decided not to touch it due to cost and relibiltly of the suspension under heavy off-road abuse. However it makes one very nice mall wheeler!! :D Oh and i would defeintly not recommend a front spool.. that is if you want to ever turn...
1TFROT 10-12-2002, 07:42 AM that's actually a good call about the TRD. but, it's not any more capable than the Z. I've owned a Z for almost 3 years now and have wheeled with a few TRDs. they are a very capable rig (stock), but no more than the Z, it's all driver at that point.
the rubicon is a great choice, definitely the best showroom wheeler now.
