: Daily Topic - Winch mounting - 11/01
jdjanda 11-01-2001, 12:08 AM Well? How'd you do it.
Personally here's the pic

The winch is mounted to 3/8" plate. From the side two C's are formed from 2x.250 and 2.5x.250 angle Holes are drilled in the top with a Grade 8 thought the holes and frame, just like the factory setup. 1 additional forward facing hole per C on the lower portion, plus a centered lower bracket with two forward holes allow 4 bolts through the front on the frame, back with a 1/4" plate. Let's just say you can fly my Scout out of a canyon by the front bumper.
Had I to do it over, I would have moved the plat up on top of the frame rails, and moved the winch back. Also I would have built a better mount for the roller fairlead.
BTW I have the plans in Auto CAD, I need to convert to image. Let me know if you want a copy.

ScoutsHonor 11-01-2001, 05:51 AM I bought one of those generic multi-mount style mounts... for my 8000 lb Warn. I then cut a 2" hole in the dead center of the front crossmember of the frame, and took a piece of 2" square tubing and welded it in REALLY good, and Whalla! You have a front receiver hitch. As soon as I get the bobbing and stuff done on my Scout I plan on doing the same by adding another rear crossmember and getting some power quick disconnects from NAPA and I'll have the ability to go from front or back.
Zane Znamenacek 11-01-2001, 06:32 AM I went the multi-mount route. I've got a receiver hitch welded and gusseted on top of the front bumper. The bumper is C shaped around the front crossmember out of overlaping pieces of 3"x1/4" angle.
I made the winch plate out of 1/4" plate (don't know what kind of steel it is, but it's WAY harder to drill through than normal stuff, some kind of hardened stuff anyway) and built a mount for the roller farelead.
For wiring, I mounted the remote solenoid box in the cab and ran welding cable to each end with welding quick connects for the plugs.
Scout Dude 11-01-2001, 06:56 AM I haven't mounted mine yet...I wasn't even planning on getting one yet (I was already to buy my 35spline axles) and my buddy asked if I wanted to buy his winch (he doesn't wheel his J-Truck) It is a Warn 8000 with controller, fairlead, mounting plate, and leather (Pleather?) cover all for $300.
Now back to why it isn't mounted yet...I currently have a Ford 2wd P/S box the mounts inside the frame to the stock mount. I picked up a YJ mount and box (4-bolt,76 casting) that I am going to mount up instead of the Ford thing. Once I get the box mounted, then with what ever room is left over, I will tuck the winch up there. This is behind the grill, but before the radiator. For those who are not familiar with the 4 cyl 80s, they have a large gap between the two. Here is a pic:

Joe,
I would like to get a copy of that design. Since I will be fabrication my bumpers and other parts like Nerfs and skid plates where needed, I like anything I can use as a basis.
I want a sort of prerunner/heavy-duty close to the grill kind of mount. Something that is small, light and strong.

somedumbkid 11-01-2001, 08:52 AM i welded some 2x3 angle to the frame and a 1/2 plate to the angle mounted my xd9000i to that it has out lasted everey thing else on the truck and did a lot of damage to a mercadies benz

Need to do a better job of fastening it all to the cross member, but it has held up to some really heavy pulls without coming off, so I think it is on there pretty good.
I do have a bit of approach angle issue, but that is not the winch, as much as it is the brush guard/push bar.

Scoutzilla 11-01-2001, 11:36 AM To mount the winch on one of my rigs I started with a Rhino grill guard. I fabed up to pieces of 1/4" 2x2 angle that bolt up to the frame in three places. Front bumper bolt, gusset bolt and one further back. For the first and last bolt I used the same method IH used to mount their step bumpers, ie putting the bolt through the frame with a pipe to keep from crushing the frame. The Rhino grill guard bottom plate is not deep enough to mount a winch so I made a new one that sticks out enough to mount the winch I had. Then I cut off the bottom mounting part of the grill guard and welded each side to the 2x2 angles I made.
Here's a link to a pic of it

I did. Board keeps changing the rules. It worked yesterday just fine.
Can't get a 100 x 100 image down to less than 5K. Still working on it, but I pulled the image for now.

Make sure the resolution is 72 DPI, and bump the compression up a little bit. Or, post the pic and I'll do it for you.

E-mail me a copy. Either send the .dwg or export it to a .dxf. I use Microstation, but I can read either format. Thanks.
TERRA-IZER 11-01-2001, 01:32 PM Haven't mounted mine yet, haven't got stuck bad enuff yet. I have a brand new in the box XD9000i that my parents bought for me as a graduation gift 4 years ago and it's still sitting in my room. They keep getting on me about them spending the money for it and me not even mounting yet.
