: Newbie needs suggestions. =)
johnnyx 11-01-2001, 03:11 PM In this pic of my 77 SII: http://www.4wdxterra.com/scout/blacktop3.jpg - see that big freekin' hole on the left corner from where the spare tire carrier ripped away from the body?
What's the best way to repair that? patch it up somehow or replace that entire corner altogether? I think it's spot-welded on, right? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!
(Also, didn't find much while searching so you can't flame me too hard!

Yeah, but we don't usually worry about *fixing* body damage - the best we do is CUT IT OFF.
That said.. you might be able to just have it welded up, body filler applied, and new paint..
They also sell complete replacement steel "end-caps" that replace just the corner if you'd rather go that way..
Terra-izer is the resident body-man..
jdjanda 11-01-2001, 03:31 PM Damm, that's a nice bumper, is that original? I never seen one in such nice condition, you could trade a collector for a whole Scout, so much for the idea of making a bumper mounted tire carrier. If you have access to a MIG welder I would go the route of repair panel. You could also try fiberglass and bondo, but I'd doubt that you could use the tire carrier again. After the repair you could use a backing plate, (round the corners) to help reinforce the corner.

johnnyx 11-01-2001, 03:41 PM Thanks for the suggestions. Actually I mounted the spare 33 carefully back inside (you can see it in the window) using an extended mess of long bolts, so the tire carrier effectively might be for sale at a fair price
I don't have access to a welder so I'd probably go with just filling it with that fiberglass stuff...probably be easiest I would think?
Yeah, the bumper appears to be original, but it does have some 'bends' in it. The pic makes it out to look pretty good though.

Well, y'know, the 60 thing fell through...
Hey, I do lots of body work too - just that only on one occasion did I make it look BETTER when I was done.
I want to know if Terra-izer chose to become a professional body man just because he knew his Scouts would cost a fortune otherwise?
Cliffy [JD] 11-01-2001, 04:06 PM His pic gets me thinkin' What do you guys think looks better, a scout with a matching color top or a black or white top with whatever color body.
For example, I'm going to be painting my scout metallic grey, and I was gonna paint the top the same, but I be a black top would look pretty sweet on it.

TERRA-IZER 11-01-2001, 08:25 PM Dam right! to what Tom said. With as many times as my truck has been on it's top or side i had to pick up the trade or i would be really broke at $40.00 an hour i would have atleast $6,000 or so on top of my current $4500.00.
TERRA-IZER 11-01-2001, 08:30 PM IHjohn, a piece of sheet metal (mount behind the hole), some pop rivits(to hold the sheet metal in place since you don't have a welder), some long strand fiberglass filler or short strand what ever you prefere, and some light weight filler(Bondo) and it's as good as new and will last a long time with out cracking. white paint is really easy to match. Hope this helps.

I'll see if I can find a pic, but a guy at the West Coast Nats had a Grey with Black top Scout. Looked real nice, so nice I never saw him on the trails only in camp.

Ya know, I like the looks of the black top (the previous top was matching white), but if you live in a warm, sunny climate, that thing gets hotter than heck inside - but I know - OPEN the window and vents!

Thanks TERRA-IZER. That seems like the easiest route and I'll get to learn about Bondo at the same time.
The opposite side (right) is pulling away too, but the sheet metal is still attached pretty well - at least for repairing purposes. I may as well do that side at the same time. I'll post results as soon as I get around to it.
