: ax15 to tf999 (in middle of swap)
97casteeltj 03-03-2010, 08:42 PM well i recently traded my ax15 for a tf999 that was out of a CJ7, i have a 97 TJ...i was under the impression that this should pretty much be a "bolt-on" job with a few minor things....but someone just informed me about the CPS and that i would need to get a ~$300 kit to make my rig drivable again.
does this sound right? if so are there other options? i have everything for the swap, and was about to bolt the tranny in but now i'm wondering if i messed up and needed to get a "newer" tf999 from a YJ.
or will i be fine by bolting it up hooking everything up? will it not start?
any advice is appreciated

4130jeeptj 03-03-2010, 08:53 PM U got to drill a hole and mount the cps ... Its not that hard but u might have to space it out to get the correct clearence..
97casteeltj 03-03-2010, 08:57 PM do you have anymore info on it, this is the first auto tranny i've installed is there a write-up on this?
thanks,
John
bcpd_03 03-03-2010, 09:09 PM you WILL need the CPS or your junk will not start. I would buy the kit from AA, it will save you time and irritation.

Did you have a CPS that picked up the crank signal from the flywheel before the swap? If so, what makes you think that you no longer need it? If you think you no longer need it, where do you think the ECM will get that signal from?
As far as drilling it goes, there may be some whiz bang master drillers out there that can hand drill that bitch in there and nail it first try, but I've never met any of them, myself included, and I'm a fair hand with a drill.
Sounds like a great way to fuck a bellhousing, ruin a 100 bucks worth of CP sensors, and generally irritate the crap out someone. Post pics though, this should be fun.
But, if you do decide to drill it, there will need to be one larger hole for the snout of the CPS to drop into and then after you figure out how far it needs to sit away from the flex plate, there has to be two more small ones drilled and tapped into the bellhousing flange to hold it in place and those are typically non adjustable shoulder screws.

what kit from AA can i use?
97casteeltj 03-03-2010, 11:52 PM are these 2 kits going to be my only options to do it "right"?

My1stNiceJeep 03-04-2010, 03:02 AM Ide find someone with the tranny out and make a template for the CPS hole. Its been done before Ide spend 300$ on the relocater.
Also you will need a newer flexplate so the CPS could read it.Thats if you do it yourself
Those are the kits you need if you go that route.
oldjeep 03-04-2010, 05:23 AM I drilled one once for a comanche (2.5L) - after I got way into the project and realized the same thing - no place for a cps on teh tranny I had bought. The way that I did it was to build a bracket that attached via 2 bellhousing bolts to mount the cps to. I built it using the Manual trans bellhousing as a guide. Once I had the bracket it was obvious where the hole in the bellhousing should go and I was guaranteed that the CPS was in the right place. Fore and aft position doesn't have to be precise with the auto, the flexplate windows are about 1" long so there is a lot of adjustment room. You just need to make sure that the CPS is going to see window, not the inner or outter ring.
Before I bought an after market CPS, I'd just get another TF999 - It'll be cheaper than the "kit"
The flexplates are pretty specific by year, so hopefully you have done your research on that and have the right one.
OkLaHoMaYJ 03-04-2010, 09:44 AM The clearance between the CPS and the flex plate, IIRC, is about the size of dime. I have seen people using a 2'' hole saw to get the opening and some thin strap steel to mount the CPS.
97casteeltj 03-04-2010, 10:30 AM i'm wondering if i could get a bellhousing off a "newer" tf999 with a crank sensor spot and then just go get a sensor from the parts store and install it along with a flexplate from a "newer" tf999.
-John
97casteeltj 03-04-2010, 10:38 AM damn it i forgot it has a built in bellhousing
i was thinking it was like my older trans
well another option before i spent the ~$250 to get a relocation kit i could check the cost to have a machine shop machine it for a crank sensor.
then get the sensor from the parts store, then install it with the correct flexplat (i'm guessing the CJ7 one that came with the trans won't work)

Unfortunately the bellhousing isn't removable on a TF999 like on an AW4. It's a one piece case.
Easiest solution is www.car-part.com and find the correct tranny. The older CJ 999 you have probabally doesn't have a lockup convertor anyway - another advantage to the newer one that would be in a TJ
oldjeep 03-04-2010, 10:40 AM (i'm guessing the CJ7 one that came with the trans won't work)
-John
Nope. The CJ flexplate doesn't have a tone ring for the CPS
97casteeltj 03-04-2010, 10:40 AM its not a DD and i have no need for a lock-up TC thanks though
97casteeltj 03-04-2010, 10:59 AM should i get the TJ or YJ flexplate?
i did a lot of research on the swap (even though it may seem not) but i guess i got the "wrong" trans so i'm running into a few more snaggs, but there is a way to make it work right.
thanks,
John

You want the flexplate for whatever year motor you have, but if you ever buy a torque convertor you want one that matches the year of the trans. (Bolt pattern is the same, but some are lockup and some are not)

you're awesome thanks for the help!!
the trans has the torq converter with it, so now i just need to get a flex plate for the 97 4.0 (with auto) to make it work....then install the cps relocation kit.
would that be the "easiest" solution??
thanks,
John

If you insist on using the trans you have, then yes - the easiest method would be to buy the cps relocation kit and install it. Cost would be about the same to just buy the correct trans. Good luck
97casteeltj 03-04-2010, 11:08 AM i guess i'd also need to get the dust shield too, or would the would that came with the tranny work?

well the thing is i didn't spend any money on this trans, i guess i could look around for a 'newer' YJ model tf999 to install, but then again i would be stuck with trying to sell this one.
thanks for all the help, atleast i know what i will need to do to make this one work now if i for sure go this route.
thanks again,

customcreationsllc 03-04-2010, 11:21 AM I'm not sure on that engine.
My engine had a spacer for the flexplate which also piloted the torque converter.
I tried just spacing it out with washers the distance was correct but it did not center my torque converter distroied the torque converter bushing in couple runs.
I ended up having to machine my own. Stupid Iron Duke motor there is no parts available for it.

97casteeltj 03-04-2010, 11:35 AM hmm so will i need to check on that to see if TJs has spacers to pilot the TC?
i have the TJ 4.0 and will use that flexplate, but its a CJ7 trans with its TC....
or does someone already know the answer to this?
oldjeep 03-04-2010, 11:57 AM Don't know if the 4.0L has one or not. I know that the 2.5L has a spacer that looks just like the one he posted.

That was one I made for the GM 2.5 iron duke to the TF904.
I wasn't sure if the 4.0L uses a spacer or not I just put it up there as something to check.

USE THIS ONE LINKED BELOW.
By the time you get the bellhousing machined and taped ect you will be out well over 300 bucksand lots of waisted time, I understand that coin might be tight but it will be well worth the wait to do it right. And while your at it pull the pan and drill two holes, one for a temp guage as th tf999 does like to get warm with big tires and one for a drain plug.
