: Remington Model #6

I stopped by my uncle's house last night, and he pulled out two of these to show me. Neat little rifles - especially for something 100 years old. I was not familiar with the "rolling block" setup, now I am.

He said they were quite accurate, and judging by how well they were built, I can see why. It really makes me disgusted by comparison to see the build quality of my Cricket .22, or even the better quality Chipmonk .22 I picked up a few years back. I need to set my Cricket by one of them one day and snap a pic - the barrel on the #6 makes the Cricket look like a thin plastic straw :shaking:

Neat story - a dozen or so years ago his house was broken into and the glass front gun cabinet right in there living room was cleaned out of every gun not stashed elsewhere... except for those two little rifles, which the thieves presumably thought were little more that children's toys or BB guns.

Anyone know any more about these things?

I looked at the Cricket, but ultimately passed when Cabela's had the Marlin semi-auto's on sale for $119 with a $20 mail in coupon during the same sale. Liked the little Henry, but couldn't justify the nearly $200 for that. I've got an old Stevens Crackshot with a bad chamber (splits the case) & it's a neat old gun kinda like that. What I'd really love to have is a Winchester 99 (I think that's the model) with a thumb activated trigger. My mom's cousin is a full on gun nut & he's made several of them from scratch. One day, I'll hit him up for one.

Happen to have the Stvens "Favorite" which was/is similar, i.e typical rolling block.
Only hassle *might* be from using corrosive primer-powder in days long gone and the barrels either corroded or leaded out. Corrosion is a barrel replace if its bad enough, leading isnt that difficult to remove. Iffen its bad and yer not especially concerned about its collectibility having the barrel replaced isnt that difficult or expensive.

I've never heard of anyone shower accolades upon a Cricket or Chipmonk regarding their build quality. C'mon....they're cheap plinkers for little kids.

I really liked the Savage Cub, but I couldn't bring myself to give my kids a rifle with a better trigger than anything I owned.

Ya it's really cool, would make a sweet backpacking gun, little heavy, but it would be fun. I need to go put it on paper, I am curious how accurate the smooth bore is.

I hope you keep in mind that is a bit of a oxy-moron. If it has a smooth bore its for shot loads and accurate is not in the idea. They are cure little rifles but they they where a like 2.25 cent gun back then. they are also not chambered in any round that you can get now cheep.

Dont get me wrong on not being hot on the things but they are always in like .22 short for BP or .32 rimfire or shot bored. They are cure little guns but I would never give a kid one as they would do better leaning to shoot with a rock.

Mine is short or long, and I've been told it will shoot decent to about 50 yards, I need to take it to the range to verify for my self.
