: Roll cage questions

Hey guys, I'm building a roll cage for my K5 and need your opinion on tying it into the frame. I was planning on building my front, middle and rear hoops and then punching through the floor, welding a slug into the "foot" of the hoops and then bending a J shaped bar that slips over the slug, gets welded to the hoop and then welds to a plate welded to the frame. Originally I planned to run the "J" bar tying into the frame in the same plane as the rest of the hoop, but after looking the truck over, it just isn't going to be possible due to body mounts and shackle mounts and such. My question is will I be drastically affecting the strength of the cage in a negative way by welding the J bars at an angle to the main hoops? I know this is hard to visualize, but what I am getting at is instead of the hoop coming through the floor and going straight to the frame (perpendicular to the side of the body), the hoop would come through the floor and then angle forward or backward to the closest open space on the frame. This also means that where the hoop ties into the frame, the bar intersects the frame at an angle (maybe a 45 degree angle or so) rather than being at a 90 degree angle to the frame. Sorry for the long question, but I am a little worried about it. Any thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated.

Wouldnt it be smarter to work from the bottom up? Get your J bars up through the floor then build your cage on top of them.

Or if you build sliders and weld your cage to some of the legs that seems to be pretty common.

Building the J-bars first isn't going to solve my issue. My question is whether the j-bars can meet the frame at an angle without negatively impacting the strength of the cage. The hoops have to be in the truck in specific points. For example, to weld a J bar to the frame at a 90 degree angle and have it come up through the floor, the main hoop might have to be in the middle of the door. to get the main hoop behind the driver's seat and have the J-bar clear the body mount or floor brace it may have to come through the floor and angle toward the frame at a 45 degree angle. Does that help?

I don't think it a problem. Just add more material, maybe you have 2 J-bends per location that your cage comes down. What I did in the front of my cage is I added 2 more tubes that tie the frame into sides of the J-bend near the bend. And I agree with Midget28 maybe you want to add rock sliders first. Brace the shit out of it and tie your cage into that.
Good luck, Jack.

I would think the best thing would be to point the front legs forward and the rear legs toward the rear at as close to 90degrees to the frame as possible and wouldnt go past 45. Then if you have room you can run a second bar from the j to the opposite side to make a sturdy mount. Also wouldnt hurt to run a bar between you front and rear legs along the floor and put a J bar to it as well and weld it at a straight 90 to the frame.

I still think Sliders are you best fix but this would work and be fine I think.
