Best for what and who?

If your 5ft tall and 100lbs. and you wanna race motocross, an XR650r is going to be one of the wort bike for you.

On the otherhand if your a little bigger and wanna do highspeed go fast desert racing then this would be the best bike for you.

Tell us what you want to do eith a bike and we'll try to help.

Best bike for me I think is an XR400.
Going to dual sprot it so I can ride it in to work.
I'm not going to race motocross.
I'll spend most of my time on mountain trails.

The KLX 300 is a fun, good hanleing, easy to ride bike. They arn't the best at anything but good at lots of things. I would go for the xr400 over the 300 because honda makes a better bike IMO but the 300 is a good bike to start with.

This is alot like asking whats the best lube

How big are you , have you ridden before, whats the terrain like there??

But if your asking about a midsize 4 stroke, my vote would go for an XR250... (unless you weigh over 280lbs) They can go as fast through trails as ANY other bike and feel a whole lot lighter than the XR400.

IMO the water cooling on the KLX300 isn't worth the small power increase and reduced reliablity over the XR250

OH one more thing EVERYONE will agree with is... there is no one perfect bike for every where and for every one.

I think a dual sported CR500 is about as close as I can get though

That would be a blast for short trips. I know the cooling was a problem on the mid 90's KLX but figured they had that all worked out. A KLX has much better handleing than the XR but I doubt he will be riding fast enough for him to even know the difference. For most of that ride we would like to have 4 or more bikes to ride from one day to the next depending on where, with who, what type of riding, and what mood we are in as to what to ride. All the bikes made today are pretty damm good so find one you like and go for it. I think you are on the right trak as far as a KLX, an XR or something like that as opposed to a YZF because it will be easyer to learn on and cheeper to start with.

I have a KlX, it's good for someone that's never had a bike before. It can be made into a fast bike but dam you gotta spend another 1,000$+ after you've bought it for a stroker pumper carb, headpipe & exhaust or get it bored to 365. Then the suspension needs to worked over. For me it's to slow & small. I'd say the best bike would be a cr500, I hear that new crf450 is nice though.

One thing you will want to remember is that you can outgrow a bike in a matter of hours sometimes minutes.
I bought my wife an XR-200. Neither of us had ever ridden dirtbikes.
Within an hour I was wanting more power and more speed. The bike just couldn't scare me.

Your size and weight I would lokk for something a little more then a 300.

Suzuki makes the drz400 in a couple variations.

Honda makes the XR400

Sounds like your looking towards a 4 stroke.

XR400 vs. XR250 for me the winner is the 250 and I weigh 220lbs... for real, I've ridden one on a big group ride and had NO problem's passing people .The rider is more important than the size of the bike.

he only reason I say xr 400 is I want to dual sport it and drive it on the free way to work

If I didn't have this requirement it would be XR250 all the way.

Depends. How much do you weigh? How good are you? What do you plan to do with it? It is all personal preffrence hun. I always have had Hondas, so that is my fav, but my brother is a Yamaha freak, lol. Call you local dealers and see if and when they are having demo rides and try to go, then you can test out lots of diffrent bikes, or try your friends before spending the money!!
