was sitting here looking at my team's weapons and wondered: could a used M249 barrel be re-purposed or milled to fit an AR upper? those barrels are super heavy duty and should last forever. and before anyone asks, no i dont have any extra and i sure as shit would sell any. but i imagine some could be purchased online.

gas port would be all retarded, chamber would be wrong, barrel extention and thread will be needed to be added, no clue on twist, if it is "used" the throat and muzzle erosion would be so much it is not worth it :flipoff2:

what would be different on the chamber? same caliber, same round

1/7 twist.

Very heavy chrome lining.

With enough effort you could make it work on an AR(threading the ass end for an AR barrel extension might be a headache but doable), just get a custom gas block made, or even figure out a way to adapt the existing one to take a gas tube. Slap a front sight on there and enjoy a really heavy, not especially practical, but satisfying project.

The M249 is a chrome lined 1:7 5.56 bbl. It is the reason the M16A2 went to 1:7
You could turn down the end, thread it for a M16 bbl extension.
Gas blocks can be found as large as .962"
Be interesting to see the stock sight height above bore.
Use it as the basis of a gas regulator for a supressed ar maybe

The gas port is on the wrong side of the sight.

Spin the bbl, keep the gas block.

but i imagine some could be purchased online.

So far all I have found are torch cut demilled bbls.
:(
Sometimes I really can't believe what our gov does to stuff before sending to the auction block

Uncut barrels run about $500 or so normally.

Feed trays and covers are about the same. :(

IIRC Noveske or Denny at GTS have AR barrels for sale with M249 thickness chrome lining. Get that on a HB and you've got a barrel that oughta last quite a while.

Aren't Noveske's supposedly machined from virgin m249 blanks?

what is a shrike?

i see the gov throw these barrels away over here believe it or not. apparently the shorty barrels are not on the books and were purchased as accessories. i wonder if one could be had and taken home as a war soviuneer?

A shrike is an overpriced, and super long waiting list afflicted belt fed upper for an AR15.
