hello,my name is Brian and i just got my first Montero. I have a 1989 LWB LS. 3.0 V6, automatic, and I also have a few questions.

first, am i correct in saying these motors are 6G72's?

second I would like to know the what model tranny, transfer case, rear/ front diff size and possible gearing that came with them.

also my 3.0 has 218k miles, is this alot and how long do these motors last with good maintenance?

as you can tell by my screen name i am usually found in toyotas, but i have zero experiance with mitsu's.

I am planning on ordering the OME shock and rear spring kit, is this a good setup?

is thier any weak links in the V6 drivetrain? (bumper to bumper) or any go to first mods for heavy-ish off roading.

Oh yea, pics comming soon..

Brian,

The engine is indeed a 6G72. The transmission and t-case are made by Aisin. The typical axle gearing is 4.625:1. 33" tires will fit with no lift, but with minor modifications to the front bumper ends (trimming) and front inner fenderwell splash guards (pushing metal forward). Your engine mileage is typical for the Monty's this age, timing belts need to be change every 60K miles...along with water pump, t-stat, v-belts, and front crankcase seal. There is an issue with the crank bolt inside the harmonic balancer that sometimes presents a problem.

There are guys who use the Mitsus for serious offroading, they are very stout. Check out 4x4Wire.com for additional details and tech, look up the Trail Talk boards. Most of the guys who post here are members there too.

I have 8 Monteros in the yard right now.
