: Bought a stinker... need some advice

So I found a butt-ugly 1982 4x4... Typical Toyota bed cancer. Interior smelled like an old dog had been living in it... I loved it. AND therefor over looked a good many things.

I knew it needed a windshield and a clutch slave cylinder and I paid $1300 for it... Then the troubles began.

Didn't really smoke when I test drove it. (I think dude had pure alcohol in it) The next morning after getting it home? Whooosh! huge cloud of black smoke. And both clutch cylinders are leaking. Dude assured me the truck was a great DD, but after the smoke I actually took a GOOD LOOK at that shiny new exhaust... He straight piped it and removed the cat; doubts it will pass emissions. Dude even removed the freaking fuel filter??? Banjos and moonshine redneck for sure.

So I started in working on it... This what I have done so far:

-Cap and Rotor
-Spark Plugs
-Sparkplug wires
-Fuel filter
-BG 44K cleaner for the fuel
-Valve Cover gasket
-BG Quick Clean before draining the oil
-BG MOA w/ Royal Purple 10w-30 and a K&N oil filter
-AAP diaphram (Cleaned most of the smoke up)
-The EGR was PLUGGED (completely)... Cleaned it up, tested it (working)... Got rid of more smoke
-Tested the VCV (working)

It really sounds great when it runs and has tons of power, BUT when sitting, if I rev it really high it still kicks stinky blackish-white smoke???

Futher diagnostics:
Coolant looks good
Oil looks good
Compression test results:
Cyl1= 135 & 138(with a little oil)
Cyl2= 128 & 130(with a little oil)
Cyl3= 120 & 140(with a little oil)
Cyl4= 125 & 140(with a little oil)

These compression results are after adding a little ring repair honey (Mechanic in a can stuff).

Today I noticed a little dark wetness on the choke/accelorator side of the carb... wet stuff... gas.

As it stands this thing WILL cost me:
Winsheild $140
Catalytic converter $180 (maybe Utah doesn't "require it" for 83- earlier as long as it pass IM)
Clutch cylinders $40 (autozone)
And one of the rear ebrake armatures is seized and will have to be cleaned up.
Carb rebuild $60 (w/ dip if I actually do it)

So my question for you Yota maestros is, "what do you think?"

Worth putting the money and time? or just sell it as it is, take a loss, and get another old Yota?

Engine starts look good? Even has good power and I can't get it to smoke running high rpms in 1st gear.

Just anything you fellows might know that might lead me down the right path here?

My condos don't like people working on vehicles, so my time is finite to get her going. (another thing I told the previous owneer who cut me no slack in telling me it only had 3 small probs)

Help? :(

BTW I only got this far because the Toyota Bible/fAQ on this board kicks serious A$$! Cheers to all involved in putting it together!

I guess might be as good of a time as any to ask if the Weber 34/36 is a smog legal carb?

You are asking us if you shoul keep it? What are you planning on doing with this truck? DD or trail+street or trail only?

I say keep it, first gens are awesome and my favorite, but I am completely unbias :flipoff2:

Yeah I suppose I am asking if I should keep it...

It would need to be a daily driver. I don't have anywhere to keep a vehicle specifically for off road fun.

How do the engine compression numbers look?

Sound like a carb problem? (The smoke)

With compression number like they are could the smoke be rings or valve related?

I'm totally down for a 1st gen Toyota, and if I sell it I will just wait till I find one that isn't so screwed up, eventually my condos will force me to sell it if I can't get plates (never ever buy a condo :) )

Sell it and look for a nicer one with fewer issues. They are out there, you may just have to pay a little more. The one you have sounds like a good candidate for a trail rig, not a DD. IMHO.

does it smoke on decel?? if so it prolly only needs valve seals, the compression test numbers are average, and fairly strong for such an old motor.... first gens rock and with a little time and money you have a truck that was built for the solid front... not adapted to fit a solid front... the motor is a breeze to work on and emissions rules are much more relaxed on older vehicles as you mentioned, i say keep it and post some pics of the stockness :smokin::smokin:

Smokes revving it up (No tach, but I would say 3000 rpms), but smokes worse coming back down.

I found today that there is some dirty gas wetness on the side of the carb w/ the accelerator/choke armatures. Smoke smells gassy and this dude had taken the fuel filter off, because he said it was making the truck hard to start... I just had no idea that somebody would take a plugged filter off and not replace it!?!?!? ANother reason I think the carb is now gunked up.

Carb hisses really bad too. (out the airhorn)

Rings are pretty tuff to deal with aren't they?

I think taking the head off might piss off my condo's HOA. (They watch me now since my old CJ5 project :) )

Dude hasn't even taken down his ad...

Report:

-Cleaned egr REALLY good, reassembled
-Rebuild carb... did everything to spec but fuel seems a little low (Through the window), but runs at high idle (More on why I can't adjust below)
-Did a valve adjustment as the service manual specs (Intake: .008 Exhaust: 012)
-Put new vacuum lines on most vacuum valve associated w/ the carb.

Here's my problem now...

When I started it up it makes a high pitch "squeeking" or "hiss" noise?

I can't help but feel this may have something to do with the valve adjustment.

When I did the valve adjustment I found a couple of exhaust valves that were a little loose (by the service manual spec) and all of the intake valves were too tight?

You think the previous owner put some custom cam in it?

If so, what would you do at this point? (And no I didn't spec where the valves were before the adjustment )

Thanks
