: Scout Light Line name in trouble

Okay, I know this is a double post from the BB, but I want to make sure that everyone who needs to see this does. This letter was posted to the IHC Digest by John Glancy, the owner of Super Scout Specialists. Apparently some foreign auto manufacturer is trying to take the Scout name, in order to market a foreign SUV type of vehicle. Please don't flood John with requests for information, because due to legal restrictions he can't tell the anyone too much yet, but if your group is on this list, or you belong to a Scout enthusiast group that needs to be on it, please help him out with the information he needs.

Yes, a major auto manufacturer is challenging the for use of our beloved Scout name. We have International Truck & Engine Corp's law dept is behind us, but since they are not really in the "Scout" business any longer (Sold to SLL in 1991) they do not have all the data needed to fight this, especially if we go to court. The burden falls on SLL to provide the necessary data. Right now we are in the talking stages with this company, but require quite a bit of pulmonary info. This info may persuade them to drop this challenge. SLL is working diligently on parts sales stats per state, IH/Scout Show participation & attendance etc.etc. There is one area of data that we have had a little trouble getting responses, & this is from all the Clubs. We have emailed all the clubs for membership numbers & states represented. The following a list of clubs that we still need information from:

PS: If anyone is offended by my double-posting here and at the BB, I'll happily delete the thread here, I just want to help out John Glancy and the Scout Light Line folks.

And I hate to see some Korean upstart spoiling the name of our vehicles with some piece of junk.

Guys, I have to say it, but I don't want to.

I'm ~75%ish sure that the newest Scout will be made by KIA!!!

In their wet dreams of course, and over JG's dead and formidable body.

I could live with a Suzuki Scout, but NOT a kia.
I guess kia sounds too much like chia to me! Water it and watch it grow. Hmmm, mabye that's better than watering an IH, and watching it RUST.

Heh, It's late, I mashed my head into the angle iron that holds my garage opener earlier, (headache) getting out of my newly elevated and absurdly tall Scout. Bah, first accident of week! I thought I was gonna skate out without a slag burn, dropped metal on foot, crap in the eye or any other light industrial accident...

I digress.

G-nite.

I'd love to see Suzuki bring out a real 4x4 again (see my petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/SuziTech/) but as someone that loves Scouts too...I hope it isn't Suzuki. I'd rather see a vehicle from Suzuki with a number designation instead of taking the Scout name.

I doubt it is Suzuki anyway...it wouldn't get past Suzuki US HQ in Brea (I'd hope!).

I doubt it is the "far east".

My bet is the Limeys, or some form of "yugoslavian"......

Well I guess I'll ask the dumb question...

How does that effect me, the little scouter all the way out in TN?

Maybe it's Nissan. With the success of the Xterra, engineering decided to create an Xtraveler but marketing wanted to call it an X800 so they agreed on a Xscout.

I heard of future plans for a full size line too, the Xtravelall.

To tell the truth I don't really care if somebody uses the Scout name. I'll just ignore it like I do all the other imports. :)

I thikn one of the issues, is that it could wind up making things difficult for the light line vendors. (Don't ask me how, I'm not a trademark lawyer, and don't understand these things any better than the next guy.)

And that's one of the reasons it affects us, because they are an extremely important resource to those of us still trying to keep our Scouts alive and on (off too!) the road.

John Glancy isn't asking for help, or asking you to do battle with the "foreign invaders", he is simply trying to get head-counts on as many Scout related organizations (wheeling clubs, etc) that are out there, and representing or using the Scout name.

Thats kinda what i was thinking about JG getting involved. I don't feel like the average guy(owner) would be affected.

Too bad that's the "decent" looking one, and not fucking SUV looking piece of trash that they are using the name on.

That thing actually looks like it would be fun to thrash on for a weekend. Or maybe use as a daily driver.
