I think that Tom Woods is the only one who does a 242 kit, and you have to send your shaft back as a core - they just remachine stock shafts.

or would it be easier just to swap to the 231?
im trying to find the best option for my xj, as the 231 seems to have more parts and options to choose from

If you don't need/want full time 4wd then I'd swap a 231. It's an easy swap

I beleive Rubicon has a hack 'n tap setup but I could be wrong.

i was thinking about switching to the 231 as it seems to have more options and i don't need the part time full time 4wd,
what are the most common problems that i might come across while switching them out?

i have a 86 xj with a 231 in it. its a 5 speed 4cyl
id be taking the 231 out of that jeep and putting it in an 89 with an auto and a inline 6 if it matters.

Look at the chart here, and make sure that your donor case has the same input spline and length. You'll also need the shifter from the donor.

Pretty sure that is all there was to it. I made the opposite switch in my kids commanche a couple years ago (231 to 242)

You have to go with a Hack and Tap. There are no SYE's for the 424. I did the Hack and tap and there are a lot of writeups on here for that. I have the rear yoke and seal flange in my garage for this.

ok so i read thru the pages on this link and i didnt know that there was a heavy duty version of it put in the zjs in 93 with the v6, im going to search more and find out if the stronger zj 231 will bolt into my xj unless someone can tell me otherwise.
