No sweat poppy set the backlash. run a pattern. and your probably get it the 1st time. Just feel the backlash on a "good" 3rd and set it up the same.....maybe a tad tighter with the spool.

You dont want to forget about bearing preload, This is a basic write up I have for setting preload/backlash ..

Side Bearing Preload

Mount dial indicator on tooth-side of ringear
Turn side adjuster on back side of ringear
Turn side adjuster in until indicator stops moving
Side adjuster starts to tighten up
also you will have a "0" zero backlash
Make sure tooth-side adjuster is still loose and you didnt bottom out on it
Add 1-2 adjuster notches to that side
Mount dial indicator on backside of ringear
Turn tooth-side adjuster in until dial indicator moves.Side adjuster
tightens up
Add 1-2 adjuster notches
Bearing Pre-Load is set, make sure bearing caps are not tightened up
before doing this. Keep atleast one revolution loose

Backlash

To increase
Start on backside of ringear side adjuster
Backout one notch
Turn tooth-side side adjuster in 1 notch
To decrease
Start on tooth-side side adjuster
Turn out one notch
Turn back or ringear side adjuster in one notch

Checking Backlash

Mount dial indicator so indicator touches convex side of tooth
Hold pinion
Rock ringear back and forth watching dial indicator

This is correct but not necessary. My buddy tried to tell me all this stuff and i told him to do the ole "wham bam in we go" deal. He said i was fawked in the head :shaking: So he took it to the rear end dude across the streeet and he did exactly what i said, lol. Wham Bam....... Good to Go ! :flipoff2:

Poppy-If your going to spool it why not use a mini-spool, then you won't have to change anything. A mini should be PLENTY strong for a zuk.

If your really sweating the $$, get out that buzz box of yours and go to town.

hey poopy, its not that hard. If you already have the spools just put them in. you most likely wont have to change the preload because youre using the same gears. I can stop by sometime. I've done tons of yota axles. I'm in Cotati.

randy's r+p got me the spools for like $150ea. i don't mind having to set them up just don't want to mess it up. :D

 As soon as the carrier bearing caps are taken off all preload is gone  how does using the same gears make a difference when preload is in the bearings:confused:

hey doug o explain to me how removing the carrier will affect the pinion, crush sleeve or pinion bearings. Most likely you would only have to reset the backlash when you put the spool in. I've never done it that way, never put stock gears back in.

i think he's talking about the preload on the carrier bearings.
