Eh. I use a conventional with the amount of times I change it vs any highway driving.

Water contamination contributes to frequent changes...that and I'm still learning how to seal a diff properly.

I'm with Oxjockey: 20 Liter pails of 80W-90, GL4/GL5 rated from the local Canadian Tire for my 4Runners Diffs, Transfer Case/Tranny. Change all of the gear oil at least 4 times a year so synthetic is to much $$$. The 20 Liter ( 5.2 US Gallons ) runs me around $30.

I use 85 - 140. I don't use syn 'cause the water contamination.

Farm Oil 85/140. Cheap and comes in 5 gal pails.

Watch out on some of the Farm oils, especially the really cheap stuff, look for anti-foaming agent, if it doesn't have it you don't want it, unless you really like the smell of 80-90, cuz it will be flowing out your vent anytime you get above 40mph.

Well, as aircrew, I can promise you we don;t make you wait on purpose....but we're busy checking out of the air conditioned hotel, returning the rental cars, raping the free breakfast buffet, and arguing about the mini-bar bill and who put those 6 porno movie charges on the bill :flipoff2:

We'll get there...honestly!

Sorry for the OT Hijack

5 gal, low end 80w x 90 with hand pump.

Change it alot, you can also check for shavings more often.

I heard you get 0.0005 mpg increase running big dollar synthetics:cool:

Running Advanced Auto or NAPA 85-140.

Gennerally Redline, Mobil Synthetic or Valvoline for non synthetic applications. I really like Redline 75W-90 in the transmission.

Jason :)

Check your breathers to see if they are clogged with dirt or bugs. When components get warm, they have to allow the expanding air out some how. If they can not breath freely from the case breathers, you will blow seals very quickly.

The other thing to worry about is (depending on your axles) and bent axle housing. On a semifloat c-clip axle, if the housing is sagging, the shafts will sit differently in the seals and will not seal up properly.
I had this problem on a D35c. Had to replace the axle end seals about once a month to keep oil out of the brakes.

Cheap ass "Coastal" 80w-90, buy it in 5 gallon jugs.. I'm always changing it...

I REALLY like the propane tank idea... that would make life SOOO easy!

Well I pulled the cover, no metal in the lube. Had the level high enough, it was above the fill hole. One thing I noticed was that the underside of the housing above and in front of the ring gear, was dry. It does not seem like the oil is slinging off the ring rear, toward the pinion. I was running 85-140w. Like I said before, I used to run 4.88's with the same pinion angle, but I was running 90w in the diff. So, other than the increased rpm's and the 140w lube, there is nothing else that is different. I am able to see around the ring gear and see the pinion and bearing. It did have oil on it and looks ok. Wear pattern is perfect(thanks gearman!) I picked up some Redline 75-90w. $28 plus tax. I will let you guys know if it makes the difference.

Robert, no axle probs. 35spline FF D60 with 14 bolt spindles.:D

Ya it works sweet. I got tired of screwing with those cheesey plastic pumps. I wanted something better, and had a few choice parts laying around. An hour later, my compressor was doing the work of filling my diffs.

Won't going from nonsynthetic to synthetic possibly make axle seals leak?

Chevron 85-140 cause I get it from work and it made my detroit behave better.
Whats the deal with the propane? I couldn't get to it.

I use relatively cheap oil of 85w multi weight (and up) in the axles. Don't know how often I will have to change it from intrusion, so I will run that until I get a better idea.

Synthetic everywhere else.

I use Mobil-1 75W90 synthetic in my diffs and synthetic Redline MT-90 in my tranny and t-case.
