Hey guys,
I just sold my 88' 2wd ranger, I now have a few more pennys in my pocket. I found a '74 F-100 4x4, 390, NP 435, NP 205, d44, F9", etc. for only $800.

Now heres my delima, Its a '74 and I was told it might have drums, I was too busy looking at everthing else to notice.

-What year did they stop making drums?
-When did they start offering discs?
-Can i convert to discs and is it worth it or too much hassle?
-OR should I look for another truck or just axle?

Thanks in advance.

My 'Raybestos' catalogue lists front rotors for '73-'79 F100-150's.
So I'ld say yur in the clear :D
Drums must be '72 and prior.

Most likely it's drums, but a lot can happen in 30 years. You can always do a disc conversion.

You make it sound like you can't stop with drum brakes. It's not nearly as a bad as you think. I have drums on my 44, and I'll bet you could couldn't tell the difference. I've also had all the parts to do a disc conversion for quite some time, the conversion just hasn't been very high on the priority list........Why???.......Because the drums work just fine!! Sure they don't work as well when they get wet, but......They still work!

If drums didn't work, they why were they used in the first place? Also check out what kind of brakes are on all the semi trucks...........oh my how will they stop

the conversion is really simple..... REALLY Simple.... for the rest of the running gear i'd pick it up...... personally.....

you can prob do the conversion for under $200

well this truck has more draw backs than just drums

1. it will have a manaul steering box very weak (doesn't like over sized tires)

2. if it has power steering it still has the same weak steering box with power assist look for a hydraulic cylinder on the steering linkage

3. dana model 21 transfer case (weak case and no low range)
or it will be a full time four wheel drive(new process 203)

typically the 76-79 trucks are a better choice how ever if the body of the 74 is in really good shape then I would by it and set it on a
78-79 running gear by that time ford had it pretty much figured out.

Should be discs but if not a member named 187racing had the whole disc setup (knuckles out) for $100 in the parts for sale section. Definitely pick it up for the parts at that price.
