Idle speed solenoid or TPS.

clean out the throttle body good.

remove it, completely disassemble it and get ALL the shit out of it.

Is your speedometer working? If not that is why.

I had that same problem after my 4.0L swap. For me it was the fact that I never hooked up the VSS (vehicle speed sensor). Too lasy to find the wire for the thing and too cheap to buy the adapter for my cable driven speedo. Afterboring out the TB it isnt as bad. I got into the habbit of tagging the go pedal when pushing the clutch in to keep her going, and now even though I dont need to I still do it...

Check the VSS, and the other things mentioned here.

That same thing happened to me after I failed to properly reconnect my speedo. It has to be clocked in the correct orientation to mate with the gears properly.

Like Rokslut said, if your speedo doesn't work, that is why.

You dont have to buy an adapter for the cable version. The factory electric sensor will directly replace a cable driven one.

The TPS check the voltages, you should have about a 5V supply and a .75VDC at idle on the signal and like 4.7VDC at full open, test with the engine off and the key on. make sure you have a even change in voltage sweep no big jumps. Give it a good cleaning too.

Check your EGR valve, if its gunked up or ripped that will cause stalling like you describe. If Its gunked most likely your MAT sensor is also gunked so clean that too.

The CPS can also cause stalling, no spark, and can be temperature dependent, but will often be hard to restart. Should have about 2.5VAC on it.

How long since you did a basic tune up, dis cap, plugs, wires, fule filter, air filter, claned vacume lines, cleaned electrical plugs.....

The 4.0s are not all the same, thats just my experience with my cherokee's 4.0.

Mine did the same thing...only chocked when I slowed down...it was the tps (throttle position sensor) It is a cheap part and a 5 minute job. Someone metioned the speedometer too...coincidentally my speedo quit working at the same time and that will make it run like hell also. Speedo sensor and TPS are both cheap and easy. I'd replace them both for what its worth.
