: some rookie questions for yah
i searched and did not find much on putting dana 44s on a samurai. i know you use 44s from a wagoneer(early 80s). i am just wondering what all the little tricks are. what are my options for leaf springs.
also every time i start the zuk i have to push the clutch in. is there a wire i can cut or something i can do so i can start it in gear.
thank you for your time

yager 10-13-2002, 07:32 AM Man, these questions.....
How can i start it in gear without using the clutch peddle.......?
You claim to have searched....ok whatever....
Lets look at the question....
"How can i start it in gear without using the clutch peddle"
Start - hmmmm cranking the engine over.... ok lets comeback to this....
Gear - hmmmm does this have anything to do with starting?
---> (if your not sure lets think about it....
can you start it with the clutch peddle in.... yes...
does it matter what gear your in when you start it? no
ok this is likley not related, lets put this information aside....
clutch pedle... does this have anything to do with starting....?
lets think about this....
clutch in - engine starts
clutch out - engine no start....
hey where on to somthing....
How is this possible?
dono, lets look...
stick head under dask look at pedels.... hmmmmm
pulls cable --- hmmm mabey important, save this for later...
hmmm kinda dark, lets get flash light....
ohhhh hmmm whats that small switch... look its got wires on it...
hmmm i wonder..... lets connect the 2 wires....
whooooo look it works.....
If you think im baggin on your question think again....
This is basic trouble shooting skills.....
Just as a reference if you go buy a $15 Haynes manual on page 268 in my book it shows the entire wiring diagram, if you look on the lower left corner (book sideways) you will see the item "clutch switch" b/y b/r wires (black/yellow - black/red)
Next time you get stuck at least show you made an attempt at the problem and not web wheeled on over to PBB for an instant answer....
No welcome from me !!!
GO AWAY ! :flipoff2:

-yag Kinda harsh wording, but yeah.:D
If you had asked something like, "Any problems with bypassing the clutch start safety switch so I can crank on the engine without pushing the clutch pedal in? Thought I'd check with the experts first before I did something that might be unwise."
You'd prolly still get some sharp retorts, but at least folks would know you were doing a bit of work on your own first. :D
BigFrank 10-13-2002, 10:37 AM Could someone please tell me why one would want to
disconnect the clutch mechanism, and start in gear like
5050 wants to.
tZUKnami 10-13-2002, 10:58 AM The only reason I could think of is if you had no gear mods and stalled at the top of a hill. Then you could use your starter to get you over the crest. I did this once at the melt when I was stock geared and on 31's. Worked fine but it's no subsitute for gears.
punkskalar 10-13-2002, 10:59 AM Big Frank,
In my old cherokee I had the torque to start it in gear and not use the clutch, sometimes its nice when you don't have the gearing to move just an inch or two... Its also nice to start on hills where rolling back might drop a tire into a hole or something... Basically its a way to keep the vehicle from rolling back (or forwards, depending) for any given reason... If you get good with you feet, you can work a clutch fast enough and not worry about... Now for the ZUK, I don't know firsthand, still building mine, but ill make it work the same way... Why not, it won't hurt anything unless you let someone with half a brain drive it...
tZUKnami 10-13-2002, 11:13 AM There is more on this same topic here...
I can't believe nobody searched. (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=47166&highlight=starter+climb)
:flipoff2:
Bill4rest 10-13-2002, 12:13 PM I can't believe people don't know about starting in gear..... it was my very 1st mod the samurai back in the day..... even before I cut my door hinges:eek:
yager 10-13-2002, 12:57 PM many toyotas come standard with a clutch pedle defeat button on the dash, it resets so you have to knowingly push it in. But thet also have a gear reduction starter like many other vehicles. I just looked at a stock zuke started while moving it to a new resting spot and it looked like a regular old fashion starter.
But yes it is true on most "stock" vehicles the lowest gear you have is using the starter in low/1st gear. and you can crawl a short distance with it.....
Had clutch cable blow at paragon and drove the whole 2nd half the day doing that... :)

SilverZuk 10-14-2002, 09:44 AM Still got my switch enabled.
But I have used the start in gear option to get my old Ford out of the creek after swamping the distributor.
I have a winch and low gears, so I doubt if I will disable it unless I have to on the spot.
billj 10-14-2002, 10:37 AM Could someone please tell me the part number for the oil filter on my Samurai?!?!?!? Also, where would I find it on the truck?!?! Is it under the dash?!?!?
I searched but found nothing to help me............
:flipoff2: :D :shaking:
Slinky 10-15-2002, 12:24 AM I use the catalog over by the filters and stuff at Auto Zone :D
SilverZuk 10-16-2002, 09:19 AM What's an oil filter?
Is that like an air filter?
Sounds like one of those stupid smog control things that you don't really need.
MuddMachine 10-16-2002, 09:16 PM Would take you guys less words to answer the question but u'd rather bitch, lol, welcome to POR newbie :flipoff2: i love it :flipoff2:
