: strange trailer idea

here is a thought....

i have a few 5 ton rockwell axle housings layin around.......

mount these under a 24 foot gooseneck....
run 22.5 big truck tires......for strength and longevity...
tires will stick up through the deck to help keep it lower...
idea is to haul 2 buggies.........around 6 to 7000 lb's together

now the real question...this thailer would be dedicated toy hauler...
what about mounting the axles directly to the 2x6 1/4 wall rect, tubed frame with 3/8 thick mounting pads welded to the frame. the axles would be u-bolted with a rubber pad between the axle and frame........

the axles have 5"by 5" tubes and are around 3/8 thick..maybe thicker...the axles are rated somewhere around 20,000 lbs...so im told

also with hydro surge brakes and a huge ass pintle hitch....pulled behind a rather large suburban bodied ex u-haul truck......:grinpimp:...so tow rig is handled..........

pretty sure the trailer would have bad manners. and im pretty sure those axles and tires are overkill. i would get some heavy trailer springs to use maybe spring under if your looking for low.

or think about an airbag suspension. hard-mounting would most likely give you a lot of trailer hop no matter what you are carrying.

(im not an expert)

hell yah the axles and tires are over killl.........the axles are already mine..and just taking up space and the idea with the tires is hopefully the tires would rott out before they wore out...and never be over loaded....

Hendrickson Walking Beam, on big rigs, suspensions use some sort of 'rubber' blocks betwenn the axles and a pad. They come in 3 different ratings of firmness. But, I think they have a bolt up through the middle to attach to the beam. Might be worth checking out. Also, gas tanks mounted on trucks(not a trailer) have a pad between the tanks mounting surfaces and the frame. About 1/2-5/8"s thick. Beal Tank/Trailer manufacturer can help you out there. Years ago I drove for Roadway Express and the original "White Roadboss" we drove had blocks between the steer axle and frame. No springs. Rough ridin bitches.

No shit, This si the worst idea I have seen posted here. Just becasue you have extra parts laying around, Doesnt make it a good idea to use them to build half assed crap...

what can i ask you is half assed about my idea...
ive seen cement trucks with only rubber issolaters for suspension...
the 5 ton axle housings are thicker and larger diamiter than any axle you will ever see under a trailer...........
the 22.5 tires and wheels.....i guess ou can tell all the truck drivers they are half assing there wheels to
:shaking:

oh let me guess....because the the axles dont have a trailer company sticker on them and they dont have some shitty electrick brake set up they arent good enough...

A lot of states require brakes on all trailer wheels. Can you do the with 5T's?

ive never actually towed anything with surge brakes, but seems like a good brake controler and electric brakes would not be as jerky and tow much nicer.

ive thot about using 14 bolts for trailer axles, but the brake thing is what stops me.

other than that,id want my axles on leaf springs.

I can attest to how terrible they hop and bounce empty and overall just a terrible idea. A truck with a walking beam suspension is a shit load better than the rigs that use this rubber/walking beam combo BS. As far as the rest of the idea I dont see anything wrong with using 5 tons and 22.5s but you could save some weight if you remove the ring and pinion and made a plate to cover the hole.

the center chunk will be gone and the plat thing is a good idea.........the trailer has axles under it but they just arent heavy enough to do what i want.........so i guess you guys have talked me into the leaf spring way of life...lol

also i can use the trailer housings to store my 5 ton spare rear shafts for the buggy.......lol

Half assed, as it it will boucne all over the place. Tow like shit and be half the trailer you could have built for the same amount of money if you did it right. Hope that clear this up for ya..I am all about fabricating and building your own shit. But this is redneck engineering..

missed that part.

Surge brakes arn't that bad. My 3 axle boat trailer has them and they work fine with 12K on it.

Nothing to add other than a pic for inspiration :flipoff2:

Don't ask me anything about it. I saw it sitting in a parking lot about a year ago. Owner was no where to be seen.

you need real suspension..........springs....
a rubber isolater is usedon tandem trucks weighing 50-60k.............

it willride like ass and hop at bumps, and fly through the air. ever tied anything down to a trailer with no suspension? it works its way loose no matter what you do!
surge brakes? haha, that will work real good on ice when you need to hit the trailer brakesto straighten the rigout when it comes around on you............. idrive a HD wrecker, and most of the time i can't acivate the (truck)aka trailer brakes to help straighten me out when sliding on snow or icein the winter, and it can get quite hairy.

and lastly do you know how good surge brakeswork in reverse?

Why not sell those 5T and get heavier trailer axles and bolt back in place of your old axles ? You would worlds ahead....Hell just sell trailer and get a bigger trailer.

One thing I keep thinking about is you ever sold trailer with that setup on it. You wouldnt get many takers if any.......TOO HEAVY

Dude that makes no sense... Why if you go through all that work to lift it with tires to make it taller than the truck??? Some peoples' kids.. :shaking:

I personally think it would be cool, but I would toss air ride on it. Then you can dump the bags and not need ramps. Also use an electric to hydra. brake converter. For $500 you get control of your brakes. Would be nice to not have to really worry about trailer tires or braking going down a mountain.

That setup, sir, is the absolute shit /thread

But seriously, try it, if you already have the stuff then you aren't gonna lose anything. And if it works, you can tell all the naysayers to fug off. If not, well you're out some time and consumables.

if the axles currently on the trailer are too small for your needs then putting heavy axles on this trailer is gunna leave you with a trailer frame that isn't rated for any more load than it was before. and losing the suspension is gunna further lower it's weight rating on ruff surfaces.

also pulling a trailer with ten lug wheels is gunna draw highway cops like flies.

The idea of selling the 5ton's. And buying bigger trailer axles. Trailer axle are really that high cost wise if you buy them for like a wholeseller like Husky trailer. Thats were i go mine. But you need to have your trailer reD.O.T'd. To up the weight rating.

And they dont really up-grade trailer frames to axle ratings. Most are built all the same. They just put on higher rated springs and axles. Intell you get up to tanum axle trailer and high gross weights.

THE TRAILER IS A GOOSE NECK THAT SOME FARMER GUY SWAPPED THE AXLES IN IM GUESSING...

IT HAS A 2X8 RECTANGLE FRAME....1/4 WALL...
I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT THE 10 LUGS AND DOT NOTICING...

I GUESS I CAN JUST GET SOME HEAVYER AXLES............MAYBE...:D
