The link in the first post didn't work, so I'm not sure what it is. I've had SB lathes for the last 20 years. Yes they are worth the coin, if the ways aren't worn out. Everything else can be fixed. Most anything you need for one can be found on eBay. All I have messed with are the 9" Tool Room lathes. The designation for them ie...9X36....40...48....54 is the length of the bed. My current one is a 1947 vintage 9"X54". I can get right at 36" BC. IIRC a 36" will take 16" or so. The only draw back to these is the through hole in the spindle is 3/4". I thread Mauser barrels on mine all the time using a steady rest. If you can send a good link, I'll check it out and give you my opinion and tell you where to look for wear.

Actually, depending on what tooling Geo has with his lathe, and how far he is from you, that's not a bad price on his South Bend. That one was made pre '45 as it has the single lever gear box, but they are still a good machine. For basic machining, all you need are a 3 jaw and 4 jaw chuck, steady rest, drill chuck for the tail stock, live center and a set of tool holders. A taper attachment is nice, and I have one, but don't use it all that often.
