: Mog Axles or Rockwells?
1970cruiser 10-12-2002, 10:37 PM I only have about 4 grand to spend and have a 70 FJ40 with a sbc conversion (327), sm465 and a np205. I love the mog axles but do not know if I can afford them. I have seen the 6x6 website and the rockwells look great with the disc brakes and affordable too. Besides the clearence what are the drawbacks with the rocs? I have chevy saginaw power steering and have sprung over cruiser axles now, can I run my leaf springs on both sets of axles? This is still a street legal rig too, no trailer yet. Thanks in Advance!

MOGXJ44 10-13-2002, 09:52 AM If you plan to run Mog axles then a link type suspension is probably the best route. Just ask ryeguy on here. He runs leaf springs and uses @ 1.25 inch links to control axle wrap. Prezteled them down at TTC. So add in the cost of some stout suspension mods if you plan to run a portal axle setup. The added leverage is probably equivalent to using a 6" block for lift. Just a thought. Hey, Rob. Got any pics of those bent links?

I assume you are using a GM NP205 which has a Passenger drop. A MOG front axle has the diff on the driversside. SO you would be looking at some custom housing work.
For the Rockwells you need to add in the price of Lockers, Mogs have them std, if you go with MOG diffs.
Both axles will require a change in rims, and driveshafts. Also as mentioned above you will probably be looking at a heavyduty link suspension for both, because of the leverage of the MOGs and the shear weight of the Rockwells.
IMHO $4000.00 isn't going to get you either axle. You'll be closer with Rockwells because of thier initial cost, but when you add rims, driveshafts, suspension, discbrakes, and lockers you probably won't have the budget for it.
I personally am going to run the MOGs because the clearance advantage and lockers are a clear choice. And just for compairison sake, I'm going to be in it at least $4000.00. $1250 for each steer axle, add in disc brake hubs $300+ ea, add in pinion conversions $250+ each axle. Thats $3600 without the cost of rim, steering, suspension, driveshafts, brake hardware, etc...
compair with Rockwells: $1200 for rebuilt front axle, $800 for rebuilt rear (non steer), lockers $800 (2), disc brakes $1120 front $800 rear. Thats $4720 right there, no rims, steering, suspension, or driveshafts.
HTH Save your money if you want to run the big axles.
The only option you have for stronger axles is to buy a stock chevy Dana 60 and 14 bolt, run full width and hummer rims if too wide, outboard your leaf springs, and buy 35 spline outers for the D60 if you think you need them. You might be able to do that for under $4000 if you stay completely stock on the D60 and 14 bolt.
gunracer1 10-14-2002, 03:22 PM i just put rockwells under my fj 62, i have a set of 404 mog axles. but they were just to much of a pain to put in my rig and i didn,t want the height. the mogs have better ground clearance and are just plain cool. i am using them in a fj buggy project. but it will be from the ground up deal. it will be a pain to make either set truly road worthy. i mean 40+ '' tires suck on the road. i have some more rockwells if you are intrested. the dana60 /14b or 70 is better for a road rig.mike

We have all parts you need for Mog axles, also we are working on selectable lockers-disc brakes with 8 lug for the Rockwell axle ! If you want to use a 14bolt we have a selectable locker for this one within 8 weeks !

The benefit of the mogs out weighs those of the rockwells IMO. Granted rockwells can be bought cheaper, but add in the lockers and the price isn't too big a difference. If you shop around you can find mog rears for $500-$600 in good condition. A front is gonna run roughly $1,200.
The mogs are lighter, and get you a larger gain in ground clearance. Granted alot of work and modifications are need for mogs.....exhaust can be a problem, as can oilpan interference. But the oilpan would interfere w/ a rockwell too.
