I have a 2000 TJ with the stock TF 999 and am putting in an atlasII which ratio do you think I should get.We are going to run 4.88-5.38 gears in the axles and 38-39.5 tires

It's very likely the 4.3 ratio would overdrive your brakes with those axle ratios and an auto when you're in 4Lo, I'd definitely stick with the 3.8.

Bah get the 4.3, and bigger brakes =). 4 wheel disc 1 ton brakes, will stop without a problem. Heck you should already have em if you are running 38s

I would go 4.3. I have a 94 YJ 4.0/999/D300(4:1), 5.13's and 40" TSL's I have 1ton axles with disks all the way around. I stop fine.

I'm with these guys, if If you are going to 38's, Im going to assume D60's or bigger. Therefore, you will have the one ton brakes, hopefully discs all the way around. If thats the case, go 4.3.

Actually I will use some 9" axles but they will be disc brakes front and rear . Front is a hybrid 9/60 knuckles.:D

I don't have mine yet but I have 39.5 boggers and 5:13 gears with the big breaks and I am going with as low as a can 4.3:1. Thats my 2 cents.

Going with a .5 higher ratio is no proper fix to help with braking problems. If your brakes can not stop your vehicle with the 4.3 in low but can stop it w/ the 3.8 I dont want you following me on any trail!:flipoff2:
For those taking the 3.8 to allow proper braking I hope you dont air down your tires as that will lower your overall gearing as well.

Go with the 4.3! Put it in neutral if you can't stop!:D

Right ow, I have the 2000 TJ with the auto, 36" tires, Dana 30 and 35 with only the 3.73 gears. So far, I have no problem with driving through the brakes. I just wish that I was lower and I wouldn't have to use the brakes!:flipoff2:

Go deep!! You'll regret it later if you don't and you can always throw it in high range.I opted for 5.46's instead of goin 6.50's and now I wish I'd gone lower.

Go BIG!

4.3! with gearing like that use the brakes? Why would you. Even on the streepest descent. you could jump out and spot yourself. anyone followin you will think your going to slow. and if you are behind them. they should beable to crawl faster than you. Fawk it.

I would think about how small the pinion gets at 5.46. That will be one of the weak links. The TF999 is med. duty. Thats the other.
if you drive it on the street. you will be piss whining the motor on the freeway.
