: Welding Coil Buckets - Shear vs. Tension

Looking through Timmay's build I noticed he did something a little different with his coil buckets up front...

He used a piece of C Channel (or cut box tube) and welded it parallel to the axle tube, therefore it is welded in shear rather than tension like a stock setup or aftermarket perches

Is it right or wrong to do this? I am turd polishing... not going to lie the factory brackets are cooked... I do not have a drill press, so my hole sawing would be free handed and probably leave much to be desired as far as accuracy is concerned... If I mounted my buckets like Tim, I could simply forget about any sort of hole saw accuracy as the 1/4" or 5/16" C-channel would center itself over the axle tube

Here is a shot from his D60 build up

And much better pics from his D44 build

He is the only person who I have seen do it this way in the Cherokee section (at least documented it) and it looks like a much easier and faster method

It dosent really matter. Either method would be fine.
It wouldn't be necessary to fully box in the spring pad.

If you need you axle further forward then you might want to notch the spring pad like a leaf spring mount so you could off set the coil spring from the axle centerline.

I've got welds going in both directions http://www.slicky.net/smilies/shrug.gif

That's actually a great idea Ash! I wanted to do a little bit of a front stretch but that could help keep the axle in the stock location as well!

Hehehe
You guys are going to see the most hardcore build up EVER soon :flipoff2:

Ok not really :shaking:
But I'll post it up so you can make fun of me :grinpimp:
