: Tub Swap?

Ok, my current project is rustier than a bucket of old nails... The frame is completely solid. I have found an 82 model body that is a perfect donor... Im fairly new to the ZUKs and learning more as i go... Mine is an 88 model...

Here we go...

1. Does an 82 ZUK tub have all the same mounting positions as my 88... Sorry, no pics... I did a search on Tubs, SJ410 and such but it didn't help, it looks the same as mine on the outside, minus some differences in the rear corner lights... Im more worried about the second question though...

2. I plan to swap my current VIN # and tags and such, is there any legality issues to this?? I have the Title in my name, registered and insured for the 88... This would keep me from having to retitle a vehicle and go through that process again...

3. Are there any VIN #'s elsewhere other than the dash that I should know of to swap?

The reason no to keep the frame the 82 sits on is that it has been modified for a 22R Toy engine, and I would like to have mine down to the frame anyway when I go to cutting and modifying for the Toy Axles, Wheelbase, Spring swaps, etc... I plan to run a G52 Toy Tranny and dual cases, so it would be so much easier to work with just a frame then swap the body on later...

????? #1: as far as I know the 84 and down zuk or SJ is not as wide as the 85 and up so the mounting points probably won't ALL be in the same place but anything can be done....

????? #2: with my latest zuk I had no tittle and didn't want to go through the process of filling all the STUPID paper work...so I just swapped the dash from an old zuk of mine and presto.....as far as legal.....probably not....but alot of vehicles on the rd wouldn't pass a vehicle safety inspection.

????? #3: will the cops around your house remove all the mud to look on the other parts of the zuk....not around here.....but I'm not sure where the other ones are

P.S. just make sure the color on the registration is the same...I just went to the motor vehicle and got them to change it on the card.......and when you change the dash make sure its put in right and doesn't look like krap.

I don't think anyone is going scrape the mud to check numbers anywhere else.
Keep the titles/bill of sales of both that way you can prove that you owned both and made one.

Someone would have to accuse you of stealing either rig before anyone is checking VIN #s.

Keep your documentation to avoid this.

If you don't have a title for one, get a notarized bill of sale for it.

The 2nd vin plate is on the frame in the passenger (I believe) front wheel well

I done that job before. I swapped a SJ410 1982 soft top over my 1989 SJ413 Samurai.

Body studs locations are the same, difference came from studs length, SJ410 are shorter and body bushings are quite smaller.

The front and rear couple of bolts are not a problem because are bolts, not studs, but the other 6 are the problem. The best solution is to fabricate a new "bolt" that bolts to SJ410 stud and give enough length and tread to use Samurai rubber mounts and nuts.

Other option is to cut SJ's bolts and put longer bolts from inside. The only problem is that you need to cut the false floor at either side of rear body mounts studs.

How can I tell the difference between whether or not its an SJ410 or not, and which would i have... Maybe a rookie question, but I looked that up as well... Also, would the 88 be an SJ413? Like i said, it looks nearly identical to what I have now... I should think that the wiring harness would be the same correct? Probably not though... I also read that the SJ410 axles are wider? Is that right, even though someone mentioned the body being narrower? Wish it was in front of me, I could answer my own questions....

SJ410 axles are narrower , front is 2.75" narrower than sammy, rear is 44" from backing plate to plate. Body differences are metal grill and small rubber flares , convertibles have folding windshield. You probably already know aboput narrower spring mounts ( rear is 32" from perch to perch inside ) little motor, side draft , 4 speed , and lower gears in both t case and diffs. 3rd members are smaller too. I imagine Rick already clued you in to some info as this is an old post .;)

Thanks man, i think ive got it all figured out at this point, not keeping anything other than the Tub from the 410, i could have used the frame since I redid every last spring mount, but i used my 413 frame instead... The mounts line up perfectly with the body, so everything looks to be inline... The front clip is gonna be 413 hood to clear the 1.3 motor, and the rest will be tube... Thanks for the insight though, im sure someone else can use it in a future search, as i found very little... Thanks....

As far as swapping the vin's is concerned, it's not legal but is very hard to trace. I wouldn't sweat that....

I haven't found any other vin's on mine other than the dash.
