: Gear swap
zuk88 10-13-2002, 01:46 PM OK here it goes..., I was going to do a Toyota axle swap, but after buying a Roadless Gear crossover steering, custom Paulson 2" back spaced wheels and a custom Traction bar for the zuk axles, pulling it all off and replaceing with Toy parts would be a huge waste of money after only one run. I was thinking of going to 5.12 or 5.38 R&Ps with my 4.16 t-case and running it for a few more years that way. I don't want "junk yard" parts so what would be the best and cheapest way to do the gear swap?? Also who is running 5.12 or 5.38 R&Ps with a 4.16 case and 33" tires? I just want to know how the set up runs on the highway(no trailer queen here). I drive about 150+ miles to the trails and don't want to run to high in the RPMs. This is a trail rig with very little daily driving chores, and I'm looking for better on/off road drivablity then the stock 3.73 gears give me now.
I plan to go to Toyota axles but want to do it right (high pinnions, gears, Allpro steering) and I don't see that kind of money rollin' in any time soon.:(

rabidray 10-13-2002, 04:33 PM hi
i went with the hybred axel houseing and junkyard 5.12 third members ...with a stock t-case and 31- 10.50 tyres,i went everywere at 5000 rpm and people were always :flipoff2: me off so i went to the 4.62 gears and now when every thing is right i can run 85-90 mph{with a 1.6 8v and webber} i will also be getting the 4.16 t-case gears before the end of this year....come tax time i hope i can send a tracker t-case to ott in canada to have it shortend 8 inches, then ill just run a tracker 5 speed stick..if i did the math correctly 3.652x1.8x4.16x4.62=127 to 1 which would be great ....still have hiway gears + super deep trail gearing..........................rabidray

For this kinda project id WANT toy axles for the not worrieng about getting home part.... tooo many parts to worry about with that size tire on long trips...
Axles are cheep to come by, weld the rear, L/R the front. run stock 4.10s gears better then where your at now.... you can add high pinions/gearing as bolt in weekend projects later....your gonna need some arms but they aint that bad. Sell off your other zuke parts....

zuk88 10-15-2002, 04:09 PM Toy 4.10's will give me a 62.4 crawl ratio and 2900 rpm at 60 mph.... this is not much better then the stock 3.73's I have now with a 56.7 crawl and 2632 rpm at 60 mph. I need at least 3500 rpm at 60 to keep this rig movin' in 5th gear. 5.13 gears would give me a 77.9 crawl with 3597 rpm at 60 mph. When I go toys I'll throw in a set of 5.29's and have 80.4 crawl and 3733 at 60 mph. I just don't have the money to set up toy axles now and the 'kick r&p's looked like a easy(read: cheap) solution for the short time.:D
scwafish 10-15-2002, 04:26 PM I would do a 6:1 tc, and not spend money on the axles. Better low low than axle gears, and you would still be able to jam on the street. When you move on to toy axles, your still good to go.

Here is my .02. I am currently running 33's, stock t-case, and 5:38's. At 60 mph I'm turning 4000 rpm. 5:38 R&P work great with 35's and a stock t-case but are a little too much for 33's. I think with 5:38's and a 4:16 you will probably turn 4000rpm at 55 mph or less!!! I would definately go with a lower R&P with a 4:16 t-case. Hope this helps some.

 OK screw it....I'll save my pennies for the 6:1 gears;)
Dychen 10-15-2002, 10:12 PM Don't be a bitch, just deal with the high RPM's :flipoff2:
Shrock 10-15-2002, 11:25 PM Are you guys taking into consideration your speedo error?
Doing some calcs:
MPH: 65
Axle Ratio: 5.29
Transmission Ratio: 0.795
Transfer Case Ratio: 1.58 (4:1 case)
Tire Diameter: 33
gives....
RPM: 4398 RPM's
Which jives with my personal experience.

LOL, NC you been drag racing the neighborhood kids on their bikes again??
ccj8008 10-17-2002, 01:25 PM I am running 5.38's (rear spool front lockrite), 4.16 T/C and 33" TSL's. 60 mph is max ! 50 is more realistic. If I have to go much more than 5 miles, it get towed.
