I am building a 1964 F600 for an expedition truck with rockwell top loaders and was wanting to shave the diff just because I have them apart and was wondering if because of the long miles it will see should I just leave it stock to have more oil in there or would synthetic be ok for my application. I have looked around and have not found post that address this. Just people with buggies and shaved diffs. Thanks for your help.

I am not sure about the synthetic but doubt that there would be any issue running it... As far as shaving I would stay away and stick with high capacity for highway miles. If you do shave it, get a plug for a temperature probe and keep an eye on it.

I've read of a few folks popping the factory sheet metal on them. I'd shave with a thicker cap just to avoid a shitty trail repair later. No experience with rockwells just web wheeling.

I've never seen a damaged to the point of leaking housing. They're around 3/8" thick.
I'd be going for capacity if it's a long distance traveler. They're not designed for high speeds, if you're traveling on the highway a lot, in a big truck, they'll get hot.

Think about it the trucks they came out of routinely caravaned hundred of miles at a time at 45-55 mph. I personaly have seen them in a DD blazer run 75 miles at roughly 65-70 mph. In fact Ouverson had one on a dyno for testing running 24hours a day for awhile at speed. Not sure exactly how fast but over 45 mph. Rumor has it a KOH style buggy is being built around a set just to prove it can be done, but that all i'm sayin about that for now

OK guys I read the threads and have some questions. Ultimately I would LOVE to throw Rockwells under my fullsize Bronco, use it for an expedition rig, daily driver type rig. I have been told that although rediculously strong Rockwells cant take the day to day abuse of highway driving. Someone told me there is a brass bearing in there that shreds at high speeds. Is that true? Please help I would love to put these under my truck.
