Is it possible to weld stainless steel (flaming river steering u joint. 303 grade..) to a piece of cold rolled 3/4" bar stock?
I know that muffler places weld stainless to stainless and I guess stainless to mufflers (or stainless mufflers????) I just never put much thought into it.

Bad idea?
Tips??

it can be done with good results. I have a tig reference book
at home I'll look at tonite and post tomorrow.

I think they suggest using s stainless rod. but I'll check anyway.

what method do you plan on using to do this work? TIG? MIG?

You should be able to do it using stainless rod. I know my welding teacher told us we can use stainless rod on mild, but i dont know if you can use mild rod on stainless. You could try some7018 or normall mig, but in the wort case you would have to use nickel rod.

AFAIR you can use mild steel filler or even a coat hanger (but dont do THAT)... SS mixes readily with normal steels.

So standard flux core wire feed should work?

My Jeep tub is built out of Stainless and I welded it to the top lip that the top sits on with just .030 gasless wire and it has held for 6 years.

All my teachings and past experience say to use a stainless rod when welding stainless to mild. Never had a problem following that advice and I run into it alot working with on ships.

Standard pratice with us is to use 309 rod when welding SS to CS.

No problem at all using stainless rod on mild steel. The benefit of using a stainless steel rod is so that the weld won't rust(after all that is the main advantage of using stainless steel...it would be foolish to weld stainless to stainless only to have the weld show rust. Anyway....I would use regular filler since rusting probably isn't of big a concern.

I've seen it done with good results using a stainless rod. Never seen anyone try a standard rod so I don't know how that would work.
