First of all :flipoff2:

This is in non-hardcore because I haven't really done anything to do it out of the ordinary. I'm nearly finished with the first "phase" of things. I know a few of my buddies on here have wanted to see it so I'm posting up.

First up, background-

'97 TJ Sport
4.0/AX-15/NP231
LP D30 with 3.55s
D35 with 4.10s
Smittybuilt bumper
chrome EVERYWHERE
sagging 4" Skyjackoff lift
3" bodylift...yeah, wow

The good stuff:

Full banks stainless exhaust, the good kind of header and flowmaster
came with a HP30 with 4.10s :smokin:
got a great deal on it
swapped in 4.0 with less miles and all is good
Alpine audio so I got tunes (I love music, fawk off)
Came with 35 MTRs in good shape on black steelies
Sold some of the crap for cash
hard top :smokin:
hard doors too

This belonged to a guy's wife. She just liked having a lifted Jeep to ride around in, didn't care about 4wd or anything like that. Can't blame her, it's a cool Jeep. The sound of the full exhaust is awesome!

Pics when I got her

So, plans ranged from using a FJ80 front and Taco rear to where we are now, which is as follows:

HP30, 4.10s, lock right (installing now)
8.8. 4.10s, Aussie (installed)
short arms, fixed lowers, stock uppers
zero to 1" susp lift - Rubi springs front, stock rear (need rears)
highline front and rear (yet to be done)
ditch 3" body lift (same)
armored up (short corners in, sliders soon to be fabbed, etc)
keep it low, lock it up (getting there)

I'll edit this and update it as I go so it stays current.

HP30 needed some help, I'll let the pics speak for themselves. It's a XJ CAD model, first used a stock plate that I modified then ordered the kit from Randy's. Also used a SealsIt D30 seal for the passenger's side since the ones in the kit were of NO use to me at all :shaking: This looks like a '87 or '88 model so be warned, skip the kit and just buy a SealsIt and never look back.

This is all I got done this weekend :(

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v289/gtxracer/Jeep/HPIM0027.jpg

I did manage to get the fuel liner painted black (it was chrome) and fill the front diff with fluid. Slapped the shafts back in and the brakes and wheels on, etc etc. I also burned in the frame insert. I was only able to hit it on one side for now since I couldn't fully drop the skid (not enough time) but I'll get the other side when I get back from this trip.

Not too much left on the list:

Get longer bolts for the LEDs
finish trimming and painting the passenger's corner
go over all bolts, zerks, cotter pin locations that I touched
Put the tailgate back on
Put center console back together
make custom tcase shifter
load up for the trail
fix RC Crawler :flipoff2:

Got more done today since I had the day off and hauled ass on the homework.

Started bending my new shifter...in the end I want to run a lever style with this kind of shifter but I might end up running a D300 if I have it my way. I want front dig with a solid drivetrain and the ability to expand when I'm ready. C&C Machine is only about an hour from me, about a half hour from my school, so I'll be getting his flip kit if I do go that route. It also might sit in the corner depending on how much I wheel my jeep

you can see the old shifter that I threw together for my first trip :D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v289/gtxracer/Jeep/HPIM0040.jpg

Bent and cut it and got this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v289/gtxracer/Jeep/HPIM0041.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v289/gtxracer/Jeep/HPIM0043.jpg

Welded it up where I had cut it and it came out great. Painted it up, and it's ready to go. It's just a simple push/pull shifter, not much. I have a new boot to go over the shifter opening and it just slips over the lever on the case. I'll crimp the end once it's on the case.

Alright, this will be a big update.

I got there Friday night and set up camp. I didn't realize it, but we actually do a lot of night wheeling in this club, Outhouse Offroad. I really like the group and it's a ton of fun. After I set up camp, we went wheeling and did a relatively easy trail. So I got stuck on a stump. They were right next to each other, could barely fit a Jeep between them on 31s, but not 35s. Had I been in a better state I would have been fine, haha. I got high centered on the larger stump and landed right on my oil pan. Lifted the entire drivetrain up enough that the fan cut into my lower radiator hose (no shroud right now, dammit) and I had to kill it. So the guy behind me tries to pull me out, no luck, the stump is wedged good. We try lifting it and winching, etc etc. Finally we got a high lift jack under the front and got it high enough, then yanked back on the Jeep and she came free. Used this super crazy blue tape that shrinks when it heats up to seal the hose, then ended that with duct tape. Worked all weekend!

Then we took turns pissing into my radiator to get the fluid back up. :p

I'll post pics and try to point out certain things in each one.

Total damage for this trip:

Dent driver's rocker (fairly big dent...need sliders badly)
cut rad hose
exhaust might be tweaked
oil pan slightly dented, need to check it out
cracked one of the mirrors (oh well)
rubbed the hardtop on a tree, they hold up well
and last but not least, bent body mount...

Nice Jeep. I noticed on one of your photos you blurred out the license plate which is a good idea, but you only did it once. You posted at least 3 other peoples plates uncool IMHO. Also I think openly advertising that you were drinking while wheeling is plain STUPID. In case you were not aware there are many groups who would prefer 4 wheelers never use public land. you don't need to give them ammunition on how irresponsible we ( you) are. But enough of my lecturing Have fun and be safe.

Yeah she laughed when she saw my bumper get ripped off :D Not much for rocks around here, but it's just as good since it's a lot of off camber climbing and this wheeling club is more hardcore than others. Lockers and winch required :smokin:

Looks like I can keep the Jeep for those of you who knew I had it for sale.

Tore the old starter out and slapped in a reman since the bendix went out on the old one. I also had to go through the entire dash and ignition since whoever installed the Clifford alarm decided it would be a good idea to splice it in :shaking: It was blowing a fuse and losing all power to the dash and ignition while maintaining a useless purpose. As soon as I unplugged the two spliced in power wires the Jeep started right up with a new fuse...wow. Good job there! Definitely couldn't have stolen the Jeep anyway  Some people.

As soon as I yank all that crap out of the ignition and dash I'll be able to take it out wheelin again. It's starting to get nice here and actually become warm so I can take the top off and have some good summer wheelin. Still need to do something about the body lift and the rocker protection.

Fixed the POS shifter, just need to clearance the tunnel and seal it back up. Hopefully I'll have brand new tires soon as I need and want them. Currently planning my 3-link front/4 link rear and hope to get most of it finished by November (pending funds). I might just wheel it a lot until I leave for training in December :D

At least I got this for some extra protection when sliding off ledges-

Out here there's not as many rocks but a lot of tricky and technical trails with some off camber stuff. If we get to a rock garden we usually crawl on it for quite a bit since it's kinda rare out here.

Hey Shawn. Yep, thinking of Kevlars or KM2s, leaning more towards the Kevlars though since I think their sidewalls are better, they'll grip more, and they're a little bigger than the BFGs. How have your road miles been? How about off road? I know you've been pretty happy with them so far, just looking for an update :D

Well on road has been pretty good. I havent balanced them since I went to beadlocks but I havent had any issues either. Off-road they do well. I went wheeling a couple weekends back and one of the guys who went had the KM2. We ran the same trails but he got a nice little gouge in his sidewall and I didnt. I also notice that they appear to be larger both in height and width compared to the KM2s.

Kinda reminds me of my dad and I going to the junkyard in 1977 to find a shifter for a 64 Chevy...all he had was a bolt to shift gears so he'd have to reach way down to do it. When are you going to be down here to wheel?

I've also been wondering what I wanted to do with my front end. I could go with a custom HP44 I found for about the same price as RCV shafts. It had been narrowed, new 4.10s and Auburn LSD, new BJs, brakes, etc. However, it had been sitting so it needed work, plus TJ brackets. I would have had a one-off stock 3/4 ton axle and would need to get some new shafts in the 8.8 to match the 5 on 5.5 pattern. After thinking about it and actually looking at the axle, I decided it would be a much better investment to buy the RCV Ultimate shafts for the HP30 since they can be sold for close to what I paid for them, are "unbreakable" with lifetime warranty, and are smoother and stronger than alloys and CTMs. Plus, with a HP30, it's a throw-away housing if I ever bend it or strip a gear set. I run 4.10s, so the gears are stronger than 4.88s and are found in factory housings easily for anywhere from free to $200. Decision made.

I do need to change my overall crawl and drive ratio, meaning if I'm not regearing I'll have to go a 4speed transmission with the granny low or a NV4500. Still deciding on that one. I don't use 5th gear as it is so I think a np435, sm420, or T18 is in order. Reading builds like Alxj64's 7/8 ton TJ has given me a lot of info and guidance so I'm thinking I'll go with a np435 later down the road. If I find a nv4500 for a good price I may go that route but I'll have to give the TJ a stretch. All this will happen mid-next year around May when I finally get done with training. Until then, I'm just gonna wheel :smokin: Going out to Evans again this weekend to test out the tires and probably break some stock shafts.

My TJ after the front highline, rear will get trimming.

Rubi springs, 1" body lift, 1" lift in the rear from the 8.8. Either some spacers or V8 ZJ coils would level out the front. Needs a flat belly and a mid arm setup with some lower gearing hopefully happening middle of 2011 :D

Plan:

3 link front
JJs, ~26-30" arm lengths
3" stretch

4 link single triangulated rear
similar arm lengths as front
4" stretch
JJs and superride bushings

4 speed granny low trans (most likely a np435, possibly a T18 or sm420)
flipped, clocked, and twin sticked D300

The only real "problem" I got right now is the wipers, blinkers, and radio don't work with the key forward. They work with the key turned back, but not forward after I start it. I think I know what's wrong, I started tearing apart the dash tonight and cleaning connections.

Drew these up a few minutes ago, just rough sketches of my mounts. The front and rear will have similar designs, however the front will likely be a skinny version due to the driveshaft clearance issues on TJs.

I'd like to use Poly's prefabbed mounts but don't have $500 to blow on something I know I can design and make, plus I had this idea on paper before I even knew about the Poly mounts. They're good products, just wish I could afford them. If I can, I'd like to use their lcg mount and an adjustable tower to make my version.

Also, my 3 and 4 link plans are in this thread since I didn't want to post that mess in here, just the final product and process.

Victor, running 40s and the smallest axles he could find, broke coming out a huge hole. I have a video of it, I'll get it uploaded as soon as I can.

Then there's me...stuck. This is the only time I got stuck and I was very impressed with the way my rig handled all the obstacles on the trails. I followed a rig with stretched wheelbase, swapped axles, and 38s for most of the 2nd day. Apparently he got stuck here too but I wasn't there to see it. If I would have given it more gas I would have rocked over it but I didn't give it enough momentum to pivot on the frame and skid. Those ruts are DEEP and swallowed my 35s but I look forward to giving that one another go after my rig goes under the knife!

Very cool. Northwest wheeling looks like fun! I like the TJ.

The 36s I'm running measure every bit of 37" compared to every other manufacturer. Something to consider. The krawlers are sick... but I run essentially a 36.8" tire, and don't have any problems out of my drivetrain. You're in mud, I'm in rocks.

Thanks! The PNW has some great spots and there's other places with rocks, just have to find them.

Yeah there'a quite a few of us trying to make the 30 work. I was at a shop yesterday that builds hp44 front ends for TJs...1500 for a bare housing. No thanks, I'll go 60.

Thanks Greg! I'm still collecting parts. I want to keep wheeling until I got everything so I probably won't start hacking off brackets until winter. I got some other stuff I can do while the rig is still together so I'll be able to wheel while I do those side projects.

Good deal! You are going to LOVE that 435 on the trail for the deep reduction that it gives you. Make sure that when you have it apart you go ahead and toss a new set of syncros in it.

Thanks man, I can't wait! I hate the crawl speed of my TJ and the low gear should be perfect. I gotta swap the case on it so I wanted to rebuild it. Is the Novak rebuild kit worth it or should I find a cheaper one?

I just snagged a rebuild kit off of Ebay when I rebuilt my SM465. However, track down instructions if you can. I felt a little bad because I called Novak once to ask them about a sintered iron bushing and shim thickness when I was rebuilding mine even though I only bought the shaft swap kit from them and not the entire rebuild kit. For the tech support, Novak is the way to go. They actually went out to the shop and measured an actual brand new assembly they had in production with me on the phone to answer the question.

I'll try to order from them when the time comes. I definitely want to rebuild the Dana 300 as it looks very rough. I'm hoping whoever installed the AA kit rebuilt the np435 at the same time but with a cracked case it probably needs it just as bad. Which clutch did you run? All the clutches for my application are $125 most of the places I go. With the wheeling I do, I don't want to spend a ton on a clutch that I'll likely blow up or burn out in a swamp anyway.

Just read through the entire build, very simular to the route I have been planning.

Quick rundown of what I have in mind: 99 TJ with the 3spd auto HP30/8.8 with 4.88s, Aussie in the front and ARB in the rear. 2.5 OME springs/shocks and currie adjustable arms.

This is a great build and has given me some very helpful information. Good job. :)
