I tried this message in a different room, with no luck. Maybe this crowd can help.

What are you guys/gals doing with your tear offs after you ... tear them off?

I really don't want to scatter a dozen of them on the course at every race. I'm especially sensitive to this as we make preparations for the Big Show in the Cali desert.

I can envision a system whereby a string loops through the end of the tear off opposite your "pull side," and attaches to the back of the helmet. That should keep them attached to you, but behind you. But, I'm also worried about them flapping in the breeze and interfering with the comm wiring, d-cel, antenna, radiator behind me, etc.

I don't want to reinvent the wheel if someone else already has a slick solution that works.

Tear them off and shove them behind the other seat, but in reality, tear-offs fucking blow in the desert. Just give the co-dog a wet rag and a dry rag, stash one under each leg and you're covered for mud. In the dust, you'll more than likely have to ditch the whole pack anyway once you get dust between the layers, and wiping the dust off with your glove or a rag is quicker and more effective.

I'm just a rec wheeler, not a KOH racer cool-guy but I do race ATV's. I use roll-off goggles. One pair of rolls will last me an entire 90 minute race even if it's really dusty.

If there isn't a good spot to just stuff them and keep 'em there, how about a coffee can?

Cut the top like a pie or pizza, leaving the outer edge intact.

Shove your fist through, release the tear off, pull hand back out.

The pie-cut lid will keep the tear-off from coming back out.

Basically the same trick I use with my 1 year old so she doesn't dump the entire cup of Cheerios out in the car.

I have never had good luck with tear offs in the desert. At Glen Helen you need them, but thats a closed course. In the desert I use Plexas, and coat the visor really good. I am than able to use the back side of my glove to clear the dust. Agreed with above poster, the dust gets in between the layers of tear offs and scratches them quickly.

For Rausch creek I can see the need, I would try having my Co driver help me with them like this;

Install a roll bar bag like the ones PRP seats sells next to the co dogs seat, and than hand them to him to stuff in the partialy opened bag. When I have co dogged I have been able to stuff a micro fiber in the sleeve of my race suit to clear the drivers shield, so i am pretty sure I could deal with a tear off.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the feedback.

Has anyone seen a roll-off setup for full face helmets ... besides the Rube-Goldberg Mud Muncher?

I like the coffee can idea. I may try to find a slick way to do that. Hopefully, I can find some room on the right hand side of the buggy. I'm already quite cramped by the plethora of buttons and levers in the middle, oh-shit bar in front of me, impact bag to the right, fire extinguishers underneath, etc.

FYI: I picked up some new tear offs from Racing Optics. They come in stacks of 7 that are pre-laminated together. That should keep the dust and mud from getting between each tear off. They mounted-up a ton easier than individual sheets too. And the distortion in the pack of 7 is much less than 7 individual tear offs.

The laminated tearoffs worked good for us at V2R even in all the silt. I like being able to wipe them with a glove and know that I'm not scratching up a discontinued visor. They don't do much for the dust on the inside of the shield that somehow gets through the pumper and the silt skirt though. That just gets wiped.

I use roll off's if its muddy. or just normal goggles in the dust, and just wipe with my hand.
Tear offs suck imo. I've tried them, and i either tear off more than one, or they get stuff stuck between the layers.

The roll offs at RC will almost be mandatory. I raced last years RCQ with a 3/4 face. Not good. Raced KOH and a couple of last years go fast races at Rausch with them also and dont think I will ever go without them again.

Another vote for roll offs. Although I've found that in the snow or rain, they don't do as well with getting water in between them and the goggle lens--found out from an old motocrosser that you string a piece of fishing line between the mounting screws, between the lens and the film, to keep the two from sticking together and getting blurry from water (haven't tried that in the snow yet). They work great in muddy and dusty conditions, though.
