OK guys I need some opinions and input. I have a 76 CJ-7 like the sig line says with a 258 thats slightly built. It developed an intake manifold leak a while back and so I fixed that and added a new stock carb at the same time. Since then when you time it with a light it runs like shit but starts easy and has a very slow throttle response. However when you set the timing by ear it runs great but the exhaust manifold gets so hot that anything around it catches fire. I know that the timing chain is set right because I just pulled it down to check when it started running like shit and I found the intake leak. Any suggestions would be great.

You just told me your problem...
Hot glowing manifolds and headers are caused by two things, retarded timing and wrong air fuel ratio.
I would start by timing it with a timing light and go from there....

sounds like valve timing, but could be bad ignition timing and the new carb you installed. did you adjust the new carb after you put it on? set the timing with the light, and take it to a smog shop to get the carb dialed. they can moniter the exaust gasses and get the mixture perfect. you can also install an o2 sensor in the exaust pipe and moniter your mixture.

sounds like it might be running lean. maybe the carb isnt adjusted right, try that.

Thanks for the help guys I'm gonna try to reset the carb and set the timing with a light after work tomorrow. I've seen manifolds/headers get hot enought to burn paint right off of a set of headers but this SOB glows cherry red when driven for about 15 minutes and then tries to burn up the Jeep, thank God the old lady brought me a new fire extinguisher after loaning mine out.
Thanks Again
