I fell into a '95 F350 7.3 auto 2wd about 6-8 months ago for a tow rig. It needed a tranny massage, but went ahead and put a Jasper in it because of warranty. I figure camper/trailer/rig combo is bumping 15K when full, water, fuel, etc... This truck will not pull it! I'm about 3000-3200 rpm's pulling 65-70 mph, but you can forget ti on a hill! fuel mileage SUCKS!!!!!

I pulled the same set up with a '06 5.9 CTD and motor handled it fine, but kept roasting tranny's. It would pull hills fine, mileage wasn't terrible considering and I didn't have the motor screaming.

What is going on? Is this motor just not stout enough? Do I need to look at a re gear of rear-end? Auto just not enough to handle it? Should I swap in a manual? Sell it and buy something else?

Just don't want to swap one set of problems for another, but this is not gonna cut it. Motor is gonna give, if tranny doesn't go first, and it can't be good pulling at that rpm, can it?

Looking for help and appreciate any help i get!!

Sounds like something is wrong with the tranny, it shouldn't be revin like that at those speeds, pulling up the hill to keep the speed up i can see it, but something doesn't seem right.

You towing with OD turned on?

Its a brand new tranny, and runs good, it just winds up like it has really low gears in the rear end. Shifts fine at any speed, but just runs out of rpm at 3000-3200. I do not pull in OD, if I could it would be fine, but tranny would burn up. I can hit a steep hill at 65-70 an be at 50 by the time I hit the top.

Is the Torque Converter locking up?

Shouldn't be, but how would I be able to tell. It runs great on flat ground and without a trailer, but it will get hot and only go about 65. These rpms are not there when in OD unloaded. I was just wondering if I had too low of a gear with too big a load for this motor, gear and auto tranny. Here is a picture of the whole thing.

FYI camper has a slide out, full bathroom with a shower. Tag says 3,900 dry, so it has to be bumping 5K with water, propane, clothes, food, etc...

The Torque Converter should still be locking up in third gear. While driving steady with the OD off, tap the brake pedal, and you should get a instant increase in RPM's by a few hundred, then it should drop down again, this is your torque converter locking up. If the Torque converter isn't locking up, you will generate excessive heat, and quickly fry the tranny.
