dirtbike keeps flooding!!

Whenever I take my bike out ('93 RM 125), it just stalls after about 15 minutes. The engine doesn't seize or anything, it just quits running. I took it to the bike shop and the said it was flooding due to a faulty petcock valve, and installed a new one. Took it out after the new one was installed and it did the same thing. BTW, once it quits running the first time, I can't start it again, or at least for a while. I don't smell gasoline or anything. Anyone know what could cause this? Also, I hve another question. A couple of months ago, I noticed that the clutch wasn't disengaging all the way(same bike) bad enough to where if i put the clutch in and shift into first and just sit there there is a lot of load placed on the engine and it dies. I took my bike to a repair shop and had them diagnose and fix the problem. The replaced the springs and plates, but not the basket. I paid around $200 (had a few little other things done too) and when i took the bike out the next time, it still had the same problem. So, I was wondering, is this normal (replacing some parts and not others and then giving bike back in exact same condition? Between that and the new fuel valve they put on that isn't doing anything, I'm feeling kinda like this shop has scewed me over. Wadda you think?

next time it quits running pull the plug and see if it is wet.The needle and seat control fuel level.I don't think the petcock is the is the problem.

My bike is having similar problems. Check the needle to see if it has even a tiny, tiny groove in it. A bike shop had my bike for 2 months and I finally picked it up yesterday, took the carb apart and found that problem. And they stripped the pilot jet threads so even a new pilot jet won't seat properly. <IMG SRC="smilies/flipoff.gif" border="0"> . I'm going to the shop today to demand a new carburator and all my money back.

do what fullsize40 says.then take the carb apart and spray carb cleaner in it. you said it dies afer about 15 minutes which makes me think it has something to do with the engine being warm.maybe its linked to the clutch problem.id try a new clutch basket if it looks worn,also adjust your clutch cable so it makes it disengage all the way. cant think of anything else

thanks for the advice, I'll do that. Just to clear things up, the bike is perfect except for it needs a new clutch basket and the flooding problem, both which I will be fixing in the next week or two. So, sorry if my ad was misleading, but I wasn't trying to decieve anyone. Now that I've said that, any takers? <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

just for my information, can a faulty petcock really possibly cause the bike to flood? I'm kinda leery of the shop I've been taking it to, even though they have a good reputation.

No. Gas is gas. Your carb should keep the "extra" gas from getting to the engine.

Suggestion= next time you go out on your bike. make sure you drive Wide Open Trottle.

Next suggestion= Go to a local bike race and ask someone who works for pro-action to look at it for you.

Sounds like you need the factory service manual.....
When it stalls, what does it sound like??

Does it still have spark even though it will not start, check it with a clean plug...

It sounds like a electrical problem to me...??


Could the repair shop had said the petcock was dirty??... that could cause a fuel loss and the bike will only run for short periods of time.......

when the bike dies, the engine keeps turning over and I can hear the compression noises from the exhaust, but it jsut isn't detonating. If I give it more gas, the 'compression sounds' get louder, too. Also, the bike shop said that the petcock was faulty, and replaced it, but that didn't fix the problem so should I expect anything back since they have not fxed my bike either time they did work on it(clutch prblem they didn't fix either)?

DOES IT HAVE SPARK???? when it dies and then won't start??? and again check it with a good plug....

k, here's the update: When I was pulling the spark plug I noticed that fuel had bee leaking from around the spark plug. Well, I guess the bikeshop didn't put the plug in all the way when I had it 'fixed' last, plus I checked the spark and it was sparking, but not a nice fat spark like it should. So, I put a new spark plug in and the bike ran great (rode for about an hour today). So, screw the bike shop. At least it was something simple, right? Now that it's fixed, any buyers? <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
