OK guys I am just starting to dig into my front axle on my 72 blazer I bought last fall. So far I know I have a 19 spline outer, I am guessing it will be a 30 pline inner.
I am looking to replace the axle shafts with a stronger after market set, Like a Yukon or Alloys. I am however not finding any listed for pre 1973? All the sets I am seeing are for 73 and newer.
It is possible that the PO used a later model axle, it is pass drop. How can I figure out if it is the stock housing, etc.
What set of axles should I get? Where is the best place to buy?
Thanks a bunch. I would have went general, but this specific to a particular chevy axle and year.

for what you are going to spend on spanky shafts you could buy a d60 and be much stronger in the end.
as for the pre 72 vrs 73+ shafts i have just recently had the chance to side by side them and compare.
72- shafts not only use a smaller ujoint but the seal surface and tin slinger are smaller than a 73+.
you will also find a completely different spindle seal on the back of the 72- spindles.
you can use the 73+ stubs if you remove the seal from the back of the spindle and switch to the 73+ stub mounted seals.

Since I am not finding anyone making a 72 axle, should I just switch over? Order parts for a 73 and just make sure to get the a 73 spindle seal to go with it?
Also does the larger u joint mean a larger diameter at the joint? When pulling my broke axle, it took a little effort to get it out through the hole in the knuckle, granted it had "expanded in diameter as a result of the damage. Will it still fit through the hole/go in and out with out pulling the knuckle.
Also what is the tin slinger? Sorry for newbieness.
Thanks again for help.

1. Yes 19 spline stubs with 30 spline inners-Dana 44 front with a corporate 12 bolt rear axle
2. Aftermarket Alloys are a good choice but depending on this trucks purpose it might be wise to upgrade this axle. 73 up is what you'll find because of the larger 5-760 or 297X u-joint size...What do you intend to use this for?
3. All chevy are p-side drop when they have straight axles...
4. please explain use of this? grocery getter-rock crawler?

Well the blazer is currently locked front and rear, it will be wheeled etc. The issue with buying a 60 right now is it is geared, locked, etc. I am looking to go for a 60 at some point, but need to get it back on the road. After I get a 60, the axles will go in my jeep with a straight six. So I am looking for something "temporary".

Well get some nice alloy aftermarket shafts and you should be good. Make sure you measure the inner lengths to make sure you get a exact fit. Then get wheeling:p
